I know it's a long shot over forums but I have a strange knocking noise. Can be heard loudest around the drivers front wheel area.

I have a billet metal pulley from lynx engineering. Can't be that dude unless that's making normal noises sound louder being solid metal???

tensioner mate...i had same issue not long back

I changed the pulley with a cheap part and the new one knocked...the noise was actually the tensioner Wink

Although, i couldn't really hear much in your vid :/

After going for a drive the noise seems quite noticeable from the timing belt / camshaft area. This noise is there hot or cold engine also. Is there anything in the head that could make this noise? Or cambelt tensioners?

The manual tensioner on the aux / serpentine / fan belt, call it what you will Wink

The bearing had shot and sounded like metal on metal...i still can't hear what the noise is, just sounds like a diesel...maybe its my speaker? Confused

It's hard to get sounds across over videos Sad the noise is the dull knock sound. I will give the tensioner a change though if cheap.

Your camera seems to be pretty good at picking up noise, you could try filming the sump and see if the noise is any more prominent. Tbh you may b better off taking it to a garage and seeing what they think, it's very hard to diagnose minor noises over the internet by way of video.

I know it's really awkward to get decent videos :/ I'd love to take it to someone for a second opinion but I only have generic garages round my area. I'd like to find a garage that has experience with hdi engines or a diesel specialist.

Why a specialist, they're all the same anyway? Contrary to popular opinion our engines are far from unique and unless it's a specific fuel issue then a diesel specialist will most likely be less help than a normal garage.

Put your ear to a screwdriver and use it like a stethoscope, could help you pin point the noise Wink

sometimes when you get a noise like that you cant trace, you have to wait for it to get worse,

since you have a lynx pulley ( you lucky dude you ) then no harm will come if the aux drive belt is removed for a test.......?

with the aux drive belt removed, does the noise still happen.

note, gates say that a crank pulley must not be run without  it driving a drive belt!?

so far so good with the proper gates crank pulley on our 306.

Ah ok thats all new information to me, I have seen multiple time that normal garages dont tend to understand the engines. But as you said must be wrong popular opinion. As Craig has said below i'm going to wait it out a little longer see if it gets louder as I can see me emptying my wallet at a garage changing stuff!

Tried dude but no luck Sad not sure if its an internal noise.

Yeah I am going to take your advice here and wait it out a little longer before I spend lots of money for no reason.

Rich from Lynx has these pulleys in stock if your after one mate Wink I have always heard two views on the running without the crank pulley belt. I have never done it and don't think I will as the sources that say it will damage the bottom end seem more clue'd up. Well that was my conclusion.

You can run the engine without the belt on, providing you aren't going anywhere and its only for a bit. It only takes a minute to take the belt off and start the engine and listen. You would know straight away whether its a tensioner or not...on the aux route anyway Wink

As above, it'll be ok for a minute. Besides, the lynx pulleys aren't damped so running one will theoretically have more or less the same effect as running one without the belt anyway.

Tbqh they'll probably understand about as much or as little as each other, but a knocking noise is a knocking noise, if you know what i mean. It really is luck of the draw, best bet is to go somewhere recommended, even then there's no guarantees. Perhaps go to a Peugeot specialist as they'll have more experience of the engine.
