205 track toy project

Story behind it is 2 years ago I decided to get a 306 rallye as always wanted to do trackdays but could never bring myself to use our only car so looked for some cheap fun hence the rallye. Unfortunately it turned into a bad buy (from a dealer over the net but when received was no way near as good as described) but stick with it and ended up spending a fair bit only to end up having to sell it on as needed the money more for a house. [/color]

[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]Trouble is 6 months on and I still wanted a toy as I missed it but as I like making it my own. So I ended up buying a rather sorry looking off the road gti which had already been semi broken for parts, but I wanted to build from scratch trying to do as much as possible myself [/color]

[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]Thought with it being a track car it could do with a cage so ended up buying another rather sorry and rust ridden shell with a weld in cage which was cut from the car and welded into mine 







Also welded in some seat bars and mounted seat

[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]Next step was to knock up a makeshift spray booth and give it a new colour, having never attempted anything like this I was unsure how it would go but after being quoted around £2k for a profesional job I thought if give it a go and am pleased with the results having only done the shell so far though

after a couple of weeks got on with a bit of polishing the paintwork

Here's a quick shot of the roof all shiny and clean pretty chuffed with the results

Also painted the engine bay black



And got my dash cut around the cage and fitted

Got my doors, bumpers, grill and fibreglass boot and bonnet painted (by me) and fitted up along with the trims. Boot fits beutufully and bonnet is ok for a fibreglass skin. Not entirely happy with the gap on the lh side but that's more to do with the ecp wings I've fitted more than the bonnet. Also not 100% sure on the grill but it's what came with the car so will stick with it for mean time

Thanks as you can prob tell a bit of copying and pasting going on with the thread from elsewhere but got there in the end. 

Just a standard gti engine for the time being.

Threads a tad delayed took best part of a year from start to current. I've done a couple of airfield days so far which have been good. Cars been pretty good just a few silly issues like a lack of power above 5.5k which hopefully I've traced down to a fuel filter issue with the fancy alloy filter not flowing enough fuel through the element.
Main issue is with not using it on the road there's no testing apart from on a trackday so little issues take a bit longer to find/iron out


Best thing is that I've not had to pay any labour doing everything myself.

that's the best part about it, doing it your self! it has took me not quite a year to practically iron out my re shell. But there is always something going to keep you busy.

yeah exactly now its built and useable the fun part is upgrading and improving on it

Had new exhaust built, had to go custom due to lowering the seats so have less room in the centre of the car to house a decent sized box

what does it sound like with the new system?

Sounds ok bit more subtle than the mix and match system I knocked up originally main thing it's 2.5" bore rather than 2" and registered at 84db when sound tested.

Thanks had them powder coated locally.

Fitted a diff a few weeks back but not tested it as of yet but hoping it makes as much as s improvement as everyone says (never driven with one before) + not been out since I found the fuel filter issue so hoping its transformed the car again  


Got some more power in the pipeline over next few months/winter but want to get the most out of what's there on a couple of trackdays first

Worth it though as so far it owes me less than £2k to get it to the stage it is now excluding recent purchases of diff and exhaust.

Funnily enough just got back from a trackday at Abingdon. Annoyingly didn't charge the go pro up as thought it was fully charged and ive found they don't hold a full charge for long even when not in use as went to put it in and it's completely flat. Good news the fuel issue is definately sorted and up to full power so first time I've driven it when it revs freely above 5k

Following Friday's track day with the car performing faultlessly what better thing to do than strip it apart and start again improving it lol this is how it finished after a couple of hours on sat

Goong supercharged this time round really loved the bodies on the 306 but was torn between doing the same again but as much as I loved the noise and throttle response the actual increase was a bit underwhelming so thought I'd go down another route this time

Thanks just need to sort out intercooler - probably going for a cosworth intercooler so I can fit above the rad and make some ducting/scoop to maximise as much airflow as pos. want to keep the standard front bumper etc so don't want a huge cooler sticking out front on show but all so want to cool effectively enough.

As for go pro yeah I'm thinking to run a cable up the cage so it can charge as it goes

currently rich is making a custom lower pulley and bracket so that I don't have to run a blanked off powersteering pump. Hopefully I'll have a intercooler by next weekend so I can start making up a frame to house the rad, intercooler, oil cooler, charger cooler and fan set up.

But whilst I wait for bits I want to tidy up some wiring and also need to change my sump as the previous owner of the engine has removed the brackets that are part of the sump. Hoping to be up and running in few weeks
