New fuel filter :)
#1
Alright guys Smile

Today I changed the fuel filter and housing as there was no way the old housing lid was coming off while it was in the car.
I bought the housing off eBay and it came with a filter included. I also went out and bought a proper filter from Peugeot which was made by motorquip.

Looking at the two together you can see the difference of them both haha Tongue glad I bought a proper one tbf.

The cheap one was 64 pleats and the proper one has 100.

Since changing the filter the idle has leveled out quite a lot so stays stable and it seems to want to rev higher than it did before Smile

So having bought a bosch filter this time I thought I would compare it to the basic cheap one I got with the housing, and the peugeot oem one from the dealership. Here is the bosch one. Disappointed tbh. Less pleats than the basic eBay one I got with the housing for free and tbh not the best construction either really.

A lot of stuff that Bosch stick their name on is absolute shite tbqh, just goes to show. Cheers for continuing the comparison, useful information for all the home mechanics out there - just because it's a name brand you recognise doesn't mean it's worth anything.

Purflux ones from GSF are v good quality and cheap too (especially when GSF put out their 40% discount codes!) - looked the same as a genuine Pug filter to me.

I doubt it makes a difference on a 306 HDi in all honesty!

Wait until you buy a Focus where the fuel filters cost £40 each and block up every year... Dodgy

This is why so many cheap cars are knackered though: "it's not worth anything so there's no point looking after it, i'll bung supermarket fuel and the cheapest parts i can find in it and then moan when it falls apart."

Purflux is genuine, i believe.

It's not 'that' often that a HP pump or injectors fail even now though, if these cheap filters were really that bad they'd be dying all over the place I reckon, even Peugeot don't use genuine after 3 years.

that's the thing though, the tolerances in the injectors are still miles less than some of the newest diesels, so whilst the filters might be sufficient for my needs in the DW10, (ie an OEM/pattern part rather than highest quality original part) I wouldn't want to chance it in my brand new 100mpg diesel

I only use MANN filters where possible. They are cheap anyway and ECP stock them.

Way I see it, whilst you may say "it's only a 90hp HDi, it only needs xyz"... The filters would have been designed in the CHEAPEST way possible with JUST enough filtration capability to stop it causing any problems.

Just use the bloody original parts (Purflux), it's literally the sake of a few quid!

been doing lots of side by side comparisons, certainly of oil filters..

the general concensus is that the order is Purflux/wix, bosch, toilet paper stuffed in a cup, fram.. from best to worst..

a lot of comparisons of the bosch oil filters put them only a tiny bit behind the wix ones, as the oil filters at least seem to be made by Champion before they merged with Fram/Honeywell, now outsourced to Affinia (who make wix filters),

both bosch and wix use the smallest filtration size of 15um and 14um, respectively, in their media, and both have the largest media surface area of equivalent filters..

I always use Purflux oil filters and when GSF stopped selling them I looked at using a Mann one but decided against it as for some reason it only has four holes instead of the 6 the Purflux ones have but after watching that video I'm more confident of their quality.

Have you seen the pictures of the bosch filter up there? Not being funny, but unless they've warped the fabric of space/time there is no way that filter has larger surface area to the oem one. lol I'd be interested to see a picture of all the filters you've got there side-by-side though, would be useful for comparison.

A lot of the issue is that a lot of filter manufacturers seem to specialise in certain vehicle manufacturers and outside of that remit aren't too bothered about what they produce. Fitted a Bosch air filter to a mercedes yesterday and it was very clearly much better than the alternative mann item, but then compare a bosch filter to the items mann offer for the lower cost cars (something like a fiesta) and they're barely any different.

I am often curious as to where euro car parts gets its supply's from really though as well.

I mean although that filter came in a bosch cardboard box. It wasn't sealed in any specific way and also the filter it's self doesn't have a single logo on it anywhere.

Maybe something dodgy is going on. Because tbh I have never seen such a cheap looking product from bosch before.

I remember a parts manager I knew saying he used to work at ECP and they'd offer to buy the boxes back on certain items e.g. an Exedy Clutch box for £1-£2 off the garages they sold them too, they'd then chuck a cheapo chinese clutch in and sell it to the unsuspecting as an Exedy Clutch.

When you get the MANN filter, place all the fliters you have in a group and do a measurement test, ie, mann filter slightly larger outside dai compared to pug oe.

the mann fuel filter I fitted showed signs of being crushed, and slightly larger diameter than the pug oe. but not as large dia as the one I initially changed ( knecht, black, crushed and virtually no gap between filter and internal body dia, difficult to get out, so restricted fuel flow?? ).

The pug oe filter dropped straight in, and showed no signs of being crushed when I took it out again to see. It back in since xmas.

I will only have the mann filter not in the car. The bosch is going back and the crappy ebay one I chucked. The oe peugeot on is in the car.

Well this just made my day. Looks like I'm not the only one with fuel filter issues. For the first 4 years, I have ordered Genuine Peugeot fuel filters (suspected to be made by Bosch), then switched to Bosch Fuel filters from ECP, which were every bit as good as Peugeot OEM. This year, they have turned out like the one above... the pleats aren't even, there's far less pleats, the filter material has changed (what's it with the f*cking dots? Is that to get the right fuel flow by not bothering to filter the diesel properly!?)

Previously, the Bosch fuel filters were made in Germany but that has changed to India... which isn't a bad thing.... but their quality control must suck at Bosch!

Sadly for me, I was half way into the process when I realised Bosch changed their filters, so I was forced to use it any way. As soon as the weather picks up, I am whacking this bad boy into it:

A Purflux filter!

In regards to filters, it's not just about how many pleats it has but the micron size of the particles removed.

I have used a MANN filter previously... and I wouldn't personally go with MANN. It wasn't as good as the Bosch.

I wonder if they have actually let the quality go rubbish due to the change of manufacturers?

That looks brilliant just because its different haha. Wonder if it actually has any filtration benefits to the standard ones.

Yeah Im aware that pleats don't mean much but tbh I often look at the general quality of the filter media and also the sealing around the top.

The seals on the bosch one I have look warped and don't look like they would fit flat and snug to the plastic mating face.

As for the micron size I suppose we can only guess haha. I would presume ones that pack more pleats in do so because they need to increased filtration surface area to compensate for the lower flow through the finer filter media but that would be a total guess really.

As far as i can tell, somewhere in the supply chain somebody decides to make a bit of money and re-box a load of shit filters as high quality items, or sometimes a company will be bought out by a larger company who promptly rag the well-known name for profit at the expense of all else.

It's a paper filter made by the same company, ie is probably a very good guide for comparison as to the quality of the filter. It's fairly unlikely that bosch make fantastic oil/air filters, but terrible fuel filters. Did you ever get that picture?

Yup Smile

Changed the Bosch one for a MANN filter today. Totally different quality to them tbf.

Mann filter - 106 pleats
Bosch filter - 60 pleats
Peugeot OEM Filter - 100 pleats
Cheap eBay filter - 64 pleats.

Seems like Bosch's change of supplier has dropped the quality a lot really. Just interesting to see the difference between them all tbf.
