How can I get more out of my Lucas?
#1
Pretty much as in the title really. I have just bought. Bosch to go on but I need to find a pulley and key for it. Also do I need injectors that to with it or will my Lucas ones be ok?

But for the time being whilst I source parts what the beat way to tune the Lucas I have read that it is good to about 130bhp? I would like to get some where near this what else would I need to do?

You can use the lucas injectors but you won't get as much out of them as you would with the bosch injectors from what I've been reading. So you should probably add the bosch lines and injectors to your list of things to get Wink

If you already have the Bosch, why not put your effort into finding some injectors etc, then get it fitted ASAP!

I've had 2 DTs, one with each pump, and speaking from experience don't even bother with the Lucas. Even on just a stage 1 tune (which is pretty much as far as I ever went) the Bosch produces more power, but more importantly it produces more power across more of the rev range, with a lot less smoke, better mpgs and the ability to burn veg...

Oh, and you need matching injectors. Mine wouldn't pull over 3k until I fitted Bosch injectors to match the pump Wink

Starting an epic lucas modding thread would be quite interesting, there must be things on the lucas that are better than they are on the bosch... as a start though they have a similar govnor system with just a spring, so putting a stronger spring in will let it rev more.

JP went quite far into the lucas before swapping over didn't he? with some pretty good results IIRC too!

Nah the smoke control ability of the Lucas is crap compared to the Bosch once you start putting lots of fuel in!

Remember, a Lucas lengthens the start and end of the injection stroke... Bosch just lengthens the end of the Injection stroke...

For more throttle you increase the timing... They also rev much better due to they're an radial design... An "Old School" screwed out Lucas revs better than a Govmodded Bosch if you don't touch anything else.

I had a lucas screwed to max and stronger spring in compensator and slightly shimmed and got decent power but gov mod isnt possible i tried but didnt work wouldnt rev correctly. There are ways to mod the lucas ive been told by a diesel specialist but he also said no point when its so easy to do the bosch Smile

Surely someone will have spare set of injector lines for a bosch on here

If your gonna be scrapping the lucas, might aswell just bend them

Give bending the lucas lines a go, just be careful, it can be done lol...

Don't do big bends in one bit, spread it over the line...

The only reason pug swapped to lucas was that they were cheaper.

Remember - the XUD9TE is essentially a 110hp engine... It's that it was better than the 2.0 8v XSi at the time... They had to derate it... The XUD7TE was a 90hp engine also, but they couldn't sell it as such... Hence why only the Rover 200 has it at 90hp, they de-intercooled it and shoved it in the 205 as the 205 DTurbo so that it wasn't as powerful as the 405 XUD9TE...

The Bosch VE was originally specified for 110hp... They dropped it to 90hp and decided that the Lucas system was better, the 175bar injection wasn't needed so went for 135... Blah.
