306's Make Me Stingy

To explain, I've been finding that if I'm spending £150/200/300 it seems like a lot because of how cheap everything is involving these cars.

Anyone else get that?

I know in terms of car modifying £200 is nothing, some cars need so much more just to get anywhere. I guess that's part of the reason we like these so much, we an have fun and get involved without it costing £ra*e.99. I have to think of the above to make me realise it's not that bad spending something like that because it's actually cheap.

Yeah i know the feeling. I sold mine last year because spending £200-£300 seemed too much considering it's nearly 50% of it's value. But then i realised it's not too bad considering it's a reliable car. Luckily the new owners decided to sell after a few months and i got it back lol

Depends is that just petrol to run it??

I guess people like them and they getting rarer so may end up going up in price

I spose you could buy a gti,vxr or somthing and never have to modified it but it's the natural of the beast some people just like modifying cars regardless of its value

Yeah I find that, I'm so used to spending so little that anything over £100 seems wholly unreasonable.

The ranger is somehow even cheaper to modify though!

Its stupidly cheap to modify and you can see real gains for not a lot of money. I havent done anything to the saab as i know I could get a roll cage for the 306 for the cost of a remap for the saab...

Its true I find myself looking at turbos recently thinking cor £150 is extortionate. When realistically its cheap as hell. The vw boys spend ridiculous amounts of money on stuff wheels costing more than 5x what their ride is worth.

I don't find 306s that cheap to mod tbh! Depends what you can do yourself though I guess, you could buy a full set of springs, a remap and decat pipe for a Mk4 Golf for less than a garage beam lowering on a Pug lol. I find new parts for 306s are expensive as well...look at Eibach springs or Bilstein shocks, no cheaper than for other makes! Its just that people on here buy used/worn out/broken stuff so it appears cheap. lol

Comparing buying parts to something that is considered an in-depth or specialist job...try again Tom.

Why? Lowering is one of the most common mods...and is much cheaper on cars without daft torsion bars lol.

Remaps are half the price. Decat pipes were cheaper. Springs were cheaper.

Only mods that are cheap on 306s are OE wheels. And if you can do it yourself, tweaking mech pumps.

Tom find a cheap remap for my audi a3 1.8t then , thats essentially a mk4 golf gti, most places looking at 250 plus, ive seen people remap hdis for 50quid

Interiors, engines, axle lowering is free diy. Decat for mine was sub £20 service parts cheap.

You bought the wrong car though. PD remaps are £40.

HDi remaps are usually ~£100 until JP has a sale on!

yeh youre paying for someones labour... if you had to buy springs and pay for the labour fitting them then it ends up about the same price?

But the point is you can chuck a pair of springs on the back of a Golf without any special tools or fighting rusty seized splines etc... Only need a jack and an hour Its a job most people could do at home. Lowering a beam isn't. Also garage labour is probably 3 hours for a beam on average (depends how seized it is), so way more than a pair of springs even if you did have the garage do it.

At the end of the day it depends what you can do yourself and what tools and time you have. In my experience, it was much cheaper to mod a Golf than it was a 306 having done both. People that have access to garage equipment and spare time may have a different experience. You don't have to agree with me lol.

Well that's a pointless comparison lol. Ones a mech pump and the other doesn't even have a pump...

XUD tweaks are also only free if you can do it yourself... Rolleyes I wouldn't be able to, and imagine it'd cost the same to have someone do it tbh.

This really is a pointless debate... somethings are cheaper, somethings are more expensive, somethings you can do yourself, somethings you cant. Procta could say his metro is the cheapest but at the end of the day none of us like metros. You could say mine and James' Saabs are expensive and inefficient... but we bought them because they were comfy and good value. If we were all the same then maybe we would all drive golfs. There would be no need for more than one car if something could do everything. Thats partly why I dont like some cars as they just fall into the boring and common category.

nope, they have 4 unit pump-injectors, one per cylinder, Düse means nozzle, so its Pump Nozzle as a literal translation.

Ok well I always got told by my one vw friend.(who is no longer my friend because of making me look stupid) they are pd because the in tank pump and the pump on side of head. Hence pump duse

Raised the torsion bars on my truck (would be the same procedure for lowering) in 30 mins with no specialist tools!
It really is that simple you could do it on the emergency jack with a wheel wrench if you wanted.

Torsion bars don't necessarily mean complicated.

You should see the amount people spend on their cars. It's a different world where I work...

However I'm still a tight arse and find it hard to believe I've pretty much spent a grand on my gearbox. That's more than the whole rest of the car including buying!!
