Right timing my 1.8 up after fitting my new head.
When I removed the old belt, I locked both cams however the crankshaft pulley wouldn't lock. It was a tiny bit out!
As you can see from the photo, at about the 11 position, there is a grove in the block with a hole in the back same size as the locking hole on the crank pulley. Is this where it should be timed to or should it be locked off somewhere else? I know the gti has a locking hole on the block behind the starter motor but the 1.8 doesn't!
As said, the pulley was literally 1 or 2mm out (could explain my emissions problems I've had since owning it I suppose!)

Just looked it up on Autodata, and yes, the hole in the crank at 11oclock is the timing hole

Nice one cheers Connor. My computer with AD on has gone up the spout

That means my timing has been out since the last belt change then

It's not like the timing was seriously retarded or anything...
Just making sure in not going to be getting a head with bent valves
Nah you can always have them out a tiny bit. I've taken the cams out and all the valves have returned nicely except for the dodgy guides.

People have been known change the timing on GTi-6s without too many issues (if you know what you're doing, of course). I believe that retarding the timing can produce more torque, though I've not seen any RRs etc to prove it.

Yep I have heard of people doing this but If I think about it, they must of advanced it (too drunk/tired to be thinking about these things!)
Will get it timed up properly tomorrow and see how it goes
