Ive connected a battary to the pump.

Direct to the pump, bypassing the relay

it started smoking

would this be due to bypassing the relay, or would there by any other reason?

It probably started smoking because you ran the pump with no hydraulic fluid in it! Its probably wrecked the pump.
Either that or they do draw a fair bit (circa 60a) so you've used too small cable and its melted the cable.

The pump works off of a 60a supply that should be run directly from the battery with a 60a fuse in line. Obviously it would then be on all the time so it needs to be switched with a relay which can handle 60a (most basic automotive relays are only 40a)
They did a separate loom for these which has everything in it. You just wire it to a suitable switched live, permeant live and earth

I have the loom which comes off the pump along with the relay.

2 heavy wires both positive,earth

Two skinny wires, I think an earth and a switched live

However do I just slice the heavy positive and run a feed from the battery, however the pump would get power without having to go through the relay

Plus the pump would  run consistantly

Skinny wires are your switching wires.

1x Thick earth goes to ground/earth.

1x Thick positive goes to the relay, then another 'thick' positive goes from other side of relay to battery via big ass 60a fuse

A relay is just a switch so what you've done there in your diagram is just skipped out the relay and powered the pump directly. The positive supply needs to be going into the relay then out the otherwise to the pump.

Correct. Make sure you wire your yellow wire to the small signal terminal on the alternator otherwise the pump will still be on all the time

Thanks Guys,

I have i wired up correctly, All I need to do is get a 10mm hp pipe made from the pump to the rack.

Would running the switched live off the solenoid live be ok, or would the alt. be better?

Hi guys the pump only seemed to work when wired this way?

Thought the pump would only work with the live going into the relay?

You've wired the relay wrong in that case. Can you get a pic of the relay and wiring with it?

I'll get one up tomorrow

.. the pump will run either way

its just the power steering will only work when wired as above

even at that the power steering is very heavy

Dont forget the steering will be heavier than standard 306 steering. The pump is designed for a 900kg car. The 306 is a good 200kg+ heavier.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the pump has been damaged from being run dry. Like any hydraulic pump, it relies on the fluid to lubricate it.

its in a 205

it has been run with a low amount of fluid ,but never dry.

Worse case scenario I just through another one in.
