dt engine difference info please!!
#1
hey experts! im planning to buy or px my car for a td 306 soon,
im looking out for a nice tuned one with between 120-150bhp

but id like to know the main differences between say an early td and a post 2000 one,
ie. are the modern ones really a 2.0 as opposed to a 1.9?
what is this talk about different fuel pumps?
do you need a bosch on a tuned pug?

anything else i should know?
what 306 would you guys reccommend? a post 2000 hdi i guess?

thanks peeps!

Post 2000 they are HDi engine which is the 2.0, which is all ecu controlled and more expensive to tune needing remaps and updated clutches, not going to get into the differences too much as its all readily available in detail on the forum,

My preference is the Dturbo though which is pre 2000 all mechanical and easy to tune ! Ideally you want a Bosch but can tune a Lucas up to about 130 Tops. But with a Bosch you can get higher results and even more with a bigger turbo!
On the 306 waiting list.

As said, differnce being DT and HDi engine - mechanical vs ECU controlled fuel pumps

bosch on a pug only allows a higher rate of fuel movement, as the injectors allow higher pressures, and are a LOT easier to adjust than the alternative lucas pump.

HDi engines, never touched in my life, ECU controlled and mapped for a small fee

ah i see,so thats quite a difference then!
out of interest does a bosch pump run any quieter than a lucas?
i heard once that a lot of diesel engine noise is actually due to its fuel pump!!

Not that I have realised both equally as noisy IMO.

as for the pump exactly, not as such, the bosch injectors (which fit along with the bosch pump) allow a greater pressure of fuel through, don't quote me on figures though... im unsure, but bosch>lucas all day...

1.9 mechanical injection, 2.0 common rail injection

The general knock / noise from the XUD normally drowns them out, but the injection pumps themselves do make ALOT of noise...you dont realise until you run them up on the flow bench, then you can see how loud they acually are!

XUD9s and Mechanical injection cannot *adjust* the injection pressure on the fly, the injectors open at a set pressure, you only adjust the injection *length*
