sealing xud sump - gasket or rtv?
#1
have used rtv silicone in the past - got some serious looking loctite stuff from peugeot

but my sump is currently leaking a little

should i re-seal with silicone again? or go gasket.

If i go silicone do I apply and let go off a bit before bolting up?

thanks and ta very much

If a gasket is available, I would use both.

The xud11 one doesnt have a gasket...so I had to use high temp gasket stuff from Wurth. Done the trick nicely.

Is your sump alloy or steel? Wonder if its warped?!

If it's a tin sump, use a decent gasket (Payen or similar) and if it's an alloy sump use an RTV sealant, ensuring that the surface is completely degreased first.

What he said ^^

The key to using the tin sump is DONT overtighten it, use a new quality gasket, and nip the bolts, if you overtighten it , you just bent between the bolt holes, and then it will never seal, chances are its already bent up from "nipping it up a bit more to try and stop the leak". Ive never had problems with straight sump and new gasket.

it is a steel sump - not a flat mating surface

done up to specified torque - ie not much

sealed ok last time i did it with rtv

this time not so much

will dig out a gasket, must have one in an old kit somewhere

I use some stuff by a company called erling and it's called dirko s. It's black and specified for jobs like rocker sealing ad well as sumps. Let it go tacky for ten mins before you mate the surfaces together though and make sure both surfaces are really clean with no oil on them

went with an elring gasket with a smear of rtv on both sides

seems to be holding so far
