Bumping old thread, sometime in the near future going to be changing the wheels on my car (b5.5 passat) the brake calipers on it are terrible looking so other than just wire brush down and some hammerite im wanting to clean them properly as youll be fit to see them more due to the new wheelsbwould this be ok to do to the calipers wouldn't need to replace seals etc? Very impressed on how your hubs turned out hence why am interested Big Grin

I've done callipers (honda) by just dumping teh whole thing still assembled into my bath, letting the fluid do the work then dissassembing afterwards and cleaning etc.
No issues with the fluid getting inside the honda callipers at least.
Even cleans up rust that might be sticking to teh seals. I'd post pics I'd took previously the last time I did it but my storage got wiped out and I lost everything honda related last year..

FWIW, my passat front pistons are pitted to feck. Just bought new pistons and seals off ebay for 12quid a side so that's a this weekend job.
For teh sake of 4quid a side for seals, I'd be tempted to change them.
I also found the rear callipers are ally so forget that. Tho they also appear to have been eaten to death by road grime, brake dust etc.

good effort
limit the current by using a headlight lamp in line with the cable or you will run away with the current as the solution gets warmer

Not sure i needed to?? 
Drawing about 1amp from beginning to end...not sure if thats good or bad.

Also does it make a difference on draw if the positive electrode is bigger?

bigger electrods will make bigger current draws but thats works in relationship with the solution stength
the higher the current draw the darker the metal will be stained to i have found

i have just cleaned up a set of front struts and topmounts which have turned out nice after thinking they were scrap inspecting them first time on stripping them Wink

i tend to run a 55w car headlight lamp so that tends to limit the current up to 4-5 amps max at 12v depending on the solution

Ah fair enough. Thats why it took so long to get good results I guess.
WhenI thumped it into 24v it went to nearly 2amp and stuff began to work much better

Seen an article that shows this in a tractor magazine.

If the connections are swapped around and tin cans used, will the tin plate come off the tins and be plated onto the work piece??

Cannot get quantities of copper sulphate, if I could I would mix up a solution and place work piece in it, self copper plates.

This happened to one of my spanners many years ago, and it was still copper plated for years. I will go thru my boxes and see if I can find it.
