Lacquer peel : can you actually prevent it?

I'm just wondering if there is anything you can do to actively prevent the lacquer peeling off, particularly on diablo red Peugeots.

I got my diablo estate in September with only a 1p size spot of peel on the roof, not only has this one now spread, but another patch has started as well, along with the mirror caps peeling and patches on the grill.


The plastic bits I'm not too bothered about since they're easily replaceable, but the roof? Anything to stop it spreading other than having to resort to having it resprayed?

I definitely feel that pain mate, got a fair bit of peel on my bootlid, especially where some lady garden keyed it not long ago. I'd also be interested in not only preventing it peeling, but also would like to know if anyone has any tips for slowing the spread of already established peel....as you say, the patches i have, have grown noticeably in the time ive owned the car.

I suspect the cold hasn't helped recently, moisture getting in through the weak bits of lacquer and expanding, but I'm unsure how it starts in the first place. Just seems to happen overnight :-\

Once it has started going, you're on a hiding to nothing in my experience.

Keeping it away from the extremes of the elements (ie out of freezing conditions and not exposed the summer sun) will likely help as will ensuring that it's got a decent coat of wax, but ultimately, once the lacquer starts to go then it will spread.

If it's any consolation my '99 Diablo 306's lacquer has gone on just about all the plastic trim bits (grill, side strips, mirror covers) now and is starting to go on the roof too, all occuring in the space of about 9 months prior to which it was immaculate, and my '92 black 205 now has pretty much no lacquer left at all on the roof as is so common on the late lacquered models... just 18 months odd after it was a slightly dull patch about the size of a CD

Just put some stickers over the top or clear vinyl. I know a guy who can make custom stickers up so PM me if youre interested. Vinyl cut pink plasters look best

That's probably the best bet to be honest, as if it's gone in two separate places already in quick succession then the chances are that the rest of the lacquer on the roof is likely to follow suit in the foreseeable future even if you did manage to hide/cover/half the existing peel.

My only concern would be whether the paint elsewhere on the car was going to follow suit in the near future if the roof, grill and mirror covers have already gone in the space of a few months - thinking about it, the lacquer has also gone on the leading edge of the bonnet of mine, although in fairness that's no doubt originated at least in part from the numerous stone chips that are inevitable on a high miler.

yup ive flatted it back and re-laqured small bits - tidies it up and stops it spreading

trouble is the laquer you get in cans is so thin and crappy, see if you can get a can of 2k made up

Not sure if this will help mate but I get honestly s*it loads of cars @ work with laquer peel and all we do is (as said) flat the edges back till thers no noticeable edge with 1500/2000 grit wet n dry paper and then relaquer the panel.
The reason for this happening in the first place is very poor quality paint, another money saver from peugeot!! Lol and the fact they don't put enough on!! it's guna peel @ sompoint it's just when!! Unless you are insanely anal with your wax!!

I've found diablo to be the worst colour for lacquer peel. Its almost like they were running short of lacquer for them!

I tried we and drying my roof back, but it just exaggerates the effects of the peel, lifting more and more off. You really and truthfully need a respray of the whole area

Hmm there's alot of roof to Respray on an estate :-\

Not like a hatch where you just need to do the square between the gutters.


Might look into that clear vinyl wrap like they use to protect cars from stone chips....

It's Diablo and China, both the pearl colours, that seem worse for it! It happens from stones chips or old bird shit I find....or where the panels rub (hockey sticks on bumper for example!).

It's not just Pugs though, theres a fair bit of laquer peel on the Vectra as well.

Any old red car, vauxhall especially seem to suffer from poor paint protection.

Pink vauxhalls are down to it being direct gloss not colour coat and lacquer. A good paint sealant will be good once you've prevented it spreading via a repair. Spot on with moisture once it's gotten below lacquer it just spreads quickly

Jenks have you found a decent sealant for red fade? Mrs corsa suffers from it and ag extra gloss isn't up to the job.

Was your china that bad? Both of mine, and Nialls have not had a problem with lacquer peel

I've noticed the nile blue 306s suffer from cracked lacquer rather than peel, caused by the same problem?

12 months ago my Diablo was pretty much immaculate bar the expected stone chips at the front that you'd expect on a high miler, and yet today it's suffering lacquer problems all over the place and is starting to look really quite tatty and getting worse on a monthly basis. Just noticed that there's numerous 2-3mm diameter spots all over the front of the roof where the lacquer is starting to go that weren't there when I washed it last month

No idea why it suddenly started suffering from so many lacquer problems in such a comparitively short space of time as it's not like they're even on adjacent panels - off the top of my head the roof, bonnet, grill, both offside rub strips and one nearside strip have all gone, almost all of it in the last 6 months.

Certainly I've never seen lacquer deteriorate at the rate it's doing on this car, just baffled why it has taken 13 years to suddenly do so at the rate it has. None of my other cars are suffering in the same way which suggests it isn't anything environmental that's behind it and must be something with the original paint itself (the front wing that was replaced and resprayed ~5 years back is perfect)

That's what's happening to my estate. In September it was mint paintwise, and now there's patches appearing in random places :-\
