Torsion Bars/ARBs - Sizes and Sources
#1
Ive being doing a little searching and there doesnt seem to be a thread detailing the exact sizes of various torsion bars or what cars they were on etc, in one thread.

So can people fill in the blanks for me and we can keep it in one thread?

306 dturbo - TB 19mm ARB ?mm
306 hdi meridian - TB 19mm ARB ?mm
306 HDi Dturbo - TB 20mm ARB 24mm
GTI6 - TB 20mm ARB 24mm
306 estate - TB 20mm ARB 21mm (ARB not conclusive)
306 estate 2001> - TB 21mm ARB 20mm
306 sedan - TB ?mm ARB ?mm
Standard Xsara - TB ?mm ARB ?mm
Xsara VTS Late Phase 2 - TB 21mm ARB 23mm
Xsara VTS Late Phase 1 & Early 2 - TB 21mm ARB 24mm
ZX Volcane - 20mm TB 22mm ARB
ZX 16v - 21mm TB 24mm ARB

And also the various options for upgraded bars from the likes of Pugsport Pug1off etc

Thanks,
Anton

Ok. Fair enough

If you upgrade rear you need to balance it though with the front

This is more so that those of us on limited budgets can pick up a spare axle off one of the gti/ hdi/ vts cars for reasonable money rather than the custom made.
£220 is way out of my price range when i could probably pick up a hdi estate axle for £50/60.

My 98 LXDT 1.9TD Sedan:
Front ARB: 20mm (measured 20.25mm)
Rear TBs: 19mm (measured 19.50mm)
Beam is not apart so cant measure the ARB
And my micrometer isnt the most accurate

Though its been said that this is currently only after info for the rear beam i am struggling to find information on the front ARB sizes, i have found the phase 1 Xsara VTS is 21mm
Would anyone know if that is the thickest ARB to fit the 306 that came out the factory?

For what it's worth, this isn't just GTi-6 that runs this configuration but also XSi, S16 and Rallye.

Not conclusive as it's the only one I've stripped, but going from my '99 HDi estate they use 21mm rear ARB's.

This isn't entirely correct - Phase 1's and early Phase 2's run 21mm TBs and 24mm ARB going from the several that I've stripped, and I think it's only the later Phase 2's that use a 23mm ARB.

To add to the list:

ZX Volcane - 20mm TB 22mm ARB
ZX 16v - 21mm TB 24mm ARB
1990 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 // 1991 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 16v // 1992 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 // 1999 Peugeot 306 HDi Estate

Just to add, just stripped down a 2002 HDi estate beam

21mm TBs and a 20mm ARB.

Bit gutted about the ARB!

Apart from torsion bar and arb sizes, does anyone know how the rear beam on a ZX (specifically 16v) differs from a 306gti one? I understand the ZX one has zero toe.

minor amount less camber, not much though.

xsara has greatest camber and toe of them all.

cheers. Any camber figures would be handy if anyone has any. Guess cars with different cambers must have different design of beam or can it be adjusted?

they're all the same design, non adjustable, its all in the machining of the stub axle hole and the flat surfaces around it.

oh right ok. I emailed IM axles and they said it was the same as the 306gti and Xsara vts beam. Obviously not exactly the same then!

Indeed, with that response I would be particularly wary of anything they send out, mismatching trailing arms is not a clever idea!!

Are you after an axle for a 16v?
