hi all I am interested to find out the differences between these two engines starting off by dividing the engine in half with the bottom block and top end.
top end = 1.6 is 16v not 8v this is all I know any more information would be handy
thanks

I think you would be better off explaining what you might be hoping to achieve so people could give you some more meaningful help, as just asked for a direct comparison of the two engines might not get you the information you need

Right the 1.6 in any 306 from the factory is a 8v. The only 16v 1.6 of that era was the 106 gti (which does fit directly in the 306 and is a very good engine for taking more power.

(This post was last modified: 05-10-2013, 06:35 PM by John1.4.)
actually the 1.6 comes in 8v and 16v, the one normally fitted to 306's is the 1.6 8v, the TU5, the 1.4 being the TU3
Block - same physical size, some extra allowances for sensors around the oil filter, larger flywheel iirc
bore and stoke are different - (1.4 = 75mm bore x 77mm stroke) (1.6 = 78.5mm bore x 82mm stroke)
1.6 16v has an extra idler pulley for the cambelt, the 8v block wasn't even drilled/tapped to accept the bolt for this
heads - lots of differences, there are 2 basic kinds of each, the 1.4 came with Spi (single point injection) and later ones were Mpi (multi-point injection), different cams / cam bearing journal sizes for each (depending on what peugeot felt like that morning) you can also get bigger valves on some 1.4 Mpi heads iirc from the 106xsi and Ax GTI
on the 1.6 side there are roller and non-roller rocker type heads, again different camshafts, bigger valves, more valves (16v) different port spacing, (earlier heads sometimes have inlet ports like this - 00-00, later ones will invariably have the spacing more like this - 0-0-0-0)
there are a few very minor changes other than these, but plenty to be thinking about
lol slow-writing fail

They never did 16v 1.6 306. Only cars that engine went in was the saxo vts, 106 gti and C2 vts (albeit in a slightly different variation)
Its been modified now and falls under a different family of engines, the THP engine which is found in most peugeots out at the moment.

lol yeah i should've worded it 'factory fitted' rather than 'normally', was just pointing out that it's not a 16v just because it's a 1.6
thanks for the rep btw scott

The earlier 1.4's are alloy blocked, and much lighter.
Custom roll cages/shiny suspension bits/general fabrication work undertaken, PM me.
Top engine mount repair/reinforcement/chocking for cracked chassis and high powered cars, drive in, drive out, 2 hour turnaround.

A boosted one actually, otherwise it'd be slower than an xsi, and that'd be shit.

There's a TU3MC as well, 1.4 Mono Montronic.
That's the alloy block one.

see what I am trying to do is build or plan to build a 16v engine but not sure what bottom the reason I am not just getting the 1.8 is because I want to have the manifold coming out the font of the block.
is it that I should just go with ether of the two 106 1.6 16v gti or rallye engines and tune them up

Why do you want the engine to be facing a particular direction?

I already have a manifold on my 1.4 306 so out the front and inlet at the back so there is no point in me putting a 2.0 gti-6 engine in if I need a new manifold

you would need a different one anyway - the 16v engines have a different one to the 8v, and the 16v ones couldn't be bolted onto the 8v downpipe, and to top it all off, the 16v 1.6 was never fitted as standard so the correct downpipe doesn't exist lots of work to get it all to fit
personally getting a s/s 4-2-1 and getting it modified to fit by a company in filey
