Replacing Speedo Housing Gearbox Oil Seal
#1
This guide will explain how to change the gearbox oil seal found on the speedo sensor housing, on the drivers side driveshaft entrance to the gearbox. This consists of 2 of the 3 seals on the gearbox.

So here is the housing, with one of the black seals visible. This is purely a dust seal, and does not contain the oil within the geabox in anyway. It prevents dust and other crap from ruining the seal behind this. The one which keeps the oil within the box.

Step by step:

1) Jack up the car and remove the drivers side wheel

2) Remove the p-clip and cover from the driveshaft securing nut (in the centre of the hub)

3) Get a friend to stand on the brakes whilst you undo this nut (it is torqued up to 325nm so be prepared for a battle if you don't have a breaker bar).

4) Remove the ball joint from the bottom of the hub so that the hub can pivot away from the driveshaft, removing the splined end of the shaft from the bearing in the hub.

5) Drain the gearbox oil from the drain nut on the bottom of the box.

6) Get under the car and undo the two 12mm securing bolts, retaining the driveshaft bearing within the lower engine mount. As below. One has a green tie on it for labelling.

7) You will now be able to slide the driveshaft out of the lower engine mount (it may need drifting at the bearing but be careful not to fowl the bearing). If it proving particularly difficult it is sometime easier to remove the lower engine mount and do so off the car.

8) Undo the three 13mm bolts holding the speedo housing on. Also unclip the speedo sensor plug on the top of this housing. They can be seen here. The picture has the driveshaft in place, but you get the idea

9) You should now be left with this:

Be careful not to lose the splined drive sensor as this comes off really easily!

This was the state of my old seal

This had to be drifted out from behind (inside the housing) from the slot you can see at about half past 9

And then the new seal drifted back in with a flat sheet of wood to protect it

10) Now clean up the mating face and the seal that seals these

After:

Put some gearbox oil on the seal to keep it from drying out and refit it.

Refitting is a reversal of removing. Just be extra careful to catch that new seal on the way in with the driveshaft!

Remember to put new gearbox oil in!

Check and double check everything is done up right.

Any questions please ask Smile
