Biodiesel

I have a friend that now works at a bio fuel plant and he has offered me biodiesel for a pound a litre, but iv heard a few bad things about running these engines on that fuel. What does people think.

According to pug its 30 or 50% thats ok but people run 100% with no issues.

Im not sure I trust my own luck to run it.

Why is worse to run an engine on biofuel than on veg then?

Bio diesel is veg that has been modified to be more diesel like and s such its fine. Some people have run HDis on it for thousands of miles, check the bio diesel forums.

TBH if there was a local supplier I would probably run it.

I was under the same impression. Although i did hear that on topgear. And thats not exactly gospel....

biodiesel has had all sort of chemicals and additives out into the veg oil

Pretty much all common-rail pump manufacturers insist on an upper limit of B20 without compromising reliability, fairly sure 5% is obligatory in pump diesel now. From what i've researched i understand the main issue is the higher/different acidity over oil-based diesel, means the seals break down quicker. I remember finding some companies selling seal kits made from something that will withstand it better, but can't remember the name of either companies or materials, so um... Haha, well you've got something to google, that's a start right?

Ran mine on biodiesel for a good few thousand miles on 100% even during winter o was still on like 50% blend. No problems ity it at all. Just need to change fuel filter otherwise Itll start cutting out

Technical Definition for Biodiesel (ASTM D 6751) and Biodiesel Blend:
Biodiesel, n - a fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the requirements of ASTM D 6751.

Biodiesel Blend, n - a blend of biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM D 6751 with petroleum-based diesel fuel, designated BXX, where XX represents the volume percentage of biodiesel fuel in the blend.

How is biodiesel made?
Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters (the chemical name for biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).


oh and i wouldnt run my HDI on 100% B100 biodiesel it will kill it
i wouldnt run it on Morrissons B30 biodiesel blend as this did kill my injectors
