Bit of late night reading regarding the upcoming transport of the truck tub to the new workshop and thought the new changes to towing laws would interest some of you

Not really changed anything really except can now use a bigger vehicle to tow upto 750kg. But now Also means can pull bigger loaded trailers. It's more clearer now for new drivers stating they can't pull more than 750kg full stop.
This means with the the volvo I can pull upto 1500kgs combined trailer and load weight. Volvo weighing just under 2000kgs It's still 300kgs more than volvo recommend

As far as I can see, as its less than the unladen weight? Or does it matter if braked or not

The second phrase seems a bit weird....
Either way ive got trailer test B+E so can tow anything anyway, but typical of them wording it complicated!

No the loaded trailer has to way less than the car you are pulling it with

So buy the biggest heaviest car/truck you can and you can tow whatever you like?
Is it 'book weight' or whatever weight the car is running at the time you get pulled over?

you are restricted to a total weight of 3.5T unless towing with a 3.5T van then you can tow a total weight of 4.25T
And yes book weight not the weight of your particular car

A 306 kerb weight which is the weight of the vehicle empty except a full tank of fuel weights 1100kgs this means you can tow a trailer which lets say is 200kgs this allows a load of 900 kgs wich is a total weight of 1100kgs.
So car weights
1100kg
Trailer weights
200kg
Maximum load is
900kg
Total
2200kg
Well under you 3500kg allowance. Easiest way to work it out is know the kerb weight of the vehicle and do not exceed it with the total trailer load weight.
Only problem is with a 306 you can't tow another 306 on a a frame as technically your going over your kerb weight. You can risk it but it could be over 60/80kgs.
All of the above works in theory except you have to take into account the MAM of the vehicle which should be stated. In my case with the volvo They recommend a maximum mam of 1200kgs. How ever if you got pulled the officer may just use the more simpler calculation of vehicle kerb weight.
the other half is rather simple if your driving a 3500kg vehicle you are limited to towing 750kg full stop

Dosent affect any of us as we have all had licences since before Jan 13 but essentially all thats changing is that the GTW/MAM if you've got a braked trailer has dropped from 4250 kg to 3500kg

So it looks like people who passed their test from 97-13 get f*cked with this complicated bullshit and people post 2013 have a simple set of rules.

I don't get what people are failing to understand here. If you've had your licence more than 5 months nothing has changed, its still the same as it was before.
Why is this so complicated for people to understand?

Because most didn't seem to understand it beforehand either. Not sure why though, wasn't that complicated imo.

As far as I understand it, we can tow anything as long as the weight of car and trailer is less than 3500kg and the car weighs more than the trailer?

The trailer gross cannot outweigh the un-laden kerb weight of the vehicle, the trailer gross added to the vehicle gross can then not add up to more than 3500kg's
