quaife ATB LSD, hot or not?
#1
What are you opinions on a Quaife ATB LSD on here?

And my biggest question, would it make the BE3 gearbox a bit stronger or weaker?

Imo , putting the power on to two wheels is more stress on the gearboxinternals, wheelspin would be better less stressfull on the box

What are the thoughts of the experts?

Im using the car as a funcar , i get a lot of satisfaction on taking on some twisties at speed etc..wont be doing trackdays or serious competition or anything like that.

Tips? comments? etc everything is welcome

Dude, you're going to be putting 300+hp through it. you'll ra*e the diff even if its just an oem open diff if you spin it up all the time...

plenty of people use a Quaife in their '6 boxes with no issues. They're a great fit & forget mod Smile I'd definitely go for one if I were you!

Seriously, for the build you're doing just get a Quaife diff.

Remember that the amount of torque load across the differential under power when the inside wheel is wanting to spin is absolutely extreme... You're trying to twist the driveshafts off with an LSD in! Raping the diff with the inside wheel spinning isn't THAT detrimental to the diff in comparison to the forces involved when you've got an LSD in!!!

You'll probably weaken the driveshafts, diff bearings - obviously past that it's not going to make much difference unless we're talking only sub 50mph...

Past 50mph you're going to be able to load the gearbox up with full torque anyway once the wheels stop spinning - so that's the only time you're going to pull the teeth off 4th and 5th... Below that with or without an LSD you're going to be able to break the tyres free... It's only coming out of corners where things are going to change - which is where you're going to get frustrated with an open diff just smoking the inside wheel like a bitch.

Saying that, it's the torque that damages things, I've been putting 310lb.ft or so through a BE3 for quite a while until I exploded the turbo, and it was quite happy, even without any oil in apparently Wink

LSDs are heralded as the ultimate modification to stop you spinning power away when you've increased it, but people do forget that they will destroy driveshafts, suspension bushes etc when it's locking and trying to force the wheels to do something they don't want to do... And IMHO can remove a lot of the fun "hoon" factor of a car, turning it into a "Seriousface" car that you only only drive like Gilles Panizzi...

^^ That's the face you'd have...

If it were me? Try it without first - if you get massively frustrated with spinning the power away, then go for it, but I've a funny feeling that trying to rein in 400hp through the driveshafts coming out of a corner with the diff locking - you're going to damage something on the output stage quite quickly... Wheelspin will be easier on driveline components - not necessarily on the gearbox.

Sorry for the essay.
