I'm looking for a classic car as a 2nd/toy. I can't decide what to look for so come on guys can you give me some suggestions. I will have £1000; must be 1978 or older, and can be restoration but not a complete rust bucket

the absolute most fun you can have on 4 wheels, easy to work on, parts are cheap, epic to drive.

only issue is tyres are becoming expensive/hard to get but if only occasional use, providing you dont let them perish they should last ages!

tyres arnt that much of an issue, i buy them at shows, get pretty big club discounts from the people trading mini tyres too
although saying that, on the rally mini im gonna have all sorts of fun trying to find 205/45/r13 performance tyres :/
dicky makes a good point, for a mint mini be prepared to spend 3k plus, but you can get a decent one for under £1500, aslong as you get one with a nice solid shell anything else is a doddle to fix

I had a mini a few years ago and I must agree...they are possibly the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. They go round corners like they are on rails. Only issue I found is that the parts don't last long...especially wheel bearings if you plan on fitting fat wheels. I've got a Capri at the moment and absolutely love it...gets looks everywhere it goes and good for some tail fun ;-)

ive always thought an old vauxhall like a victor would be a cool project, just that i bet getting parts for them is pretty much impossible
i would also love a hillman imp, space frame chassis and motorbike engine

Im hopein to get a ford anglia in the near future. Been wanting one for ages got a fiew ideas for one. Nice wide arches lowerd and a roof chop hopefully
when in doubt...... flat out.

mine woz and still is the best cars iv owned super reliable with the right upgrades. Droped by 30-40 mm and it handles like a dream. Could get my 74 beetle sideways round most bends and it woz only a 1300cc
But still each to ther own i suppose
when in doubt...... flat out.

Mini ftw
you can buy decent shells with a few boxes of parts for 1k
get one with a decent shell n subframes rather than awesome wheels/engine etc as those bits can be fixed and sorted easily

Phase 1 306 s16, definatly a future classic.
My vote would definatly be a mini, but also how about a 205? Their eligible for classic car insurance now, nearly as epic to drive as a mini

i wouldn't buy a mini, to many about plus they are a common classic too, not to mention they are getting well expencive for parts, plus getting a decent shell for 1k is questionable too! a lot of bodged ones out there. my aunt had a two. she got shot of her carbed mini 35 that was a soild shell. for a injection based one, that had been tarted up. when my cousins boyfriend came to do some bodywork on it. he found that the shell was full of filler! he said it was a right night mere. why not look at a ford fiesta mk1 or an capri? or even a tina. bit of old school ford is better than a common mini.
i was offered a tina mk5 estate 8 years ago, for 500 quid! mint con aswell, if you look at the prices now. 2.5k id have made a 2k profit. shame i didn't have the cash or space at the time!

The MGB and Moggie Minor i can vouch for parts being cheap(ish) deffo cheaper on the moggie... Both are plentiful and have loads of club following so a great support network. I'm sure fords and triumphs will have the same but have no experience of them.
