I just got my peugeot 306 hdi 99% done all the parts cheap and done by my self and afew friends. I just fitted the last part needed the slam panel everything fine. But now something serious has started a nightmare. I also drove the car 10miles before all this and it was driving fine. But abit of black smoke when the turbo kicks in. Also wen your foot right down. Its allways done this also on tick over reving it.
I think the car run out of diesel cause I was on a hill. It just wouldn't go up the hill so I put some more diesel in the car it then moved fine.
Big problem black smoke you cant see out the back window! Also there no power in the car it struggles like hell. I dont think I can get the turbo to come on when driving.
The car felt like its been going slower recently sluggish. But when I first got it was flying around like a bat out of hell.
The car start up fine, ticks over fine. It doesn't smoke on tick over left running. But god knows wats going on its no good for the road unless Im mad max to get rid of the bad guys!
Its just black soot coming out the exhaust. There no blue, white or oil from the exhaust.
Just been outside in the car with bright LED torches they show up everything. The egr valve the black smoke comes out of that unit?
The egr valve I have you can see a bar in the middle. There like a valve moving up and down it stays near the top 1/4 posistion then rev goes in abit?

make sure you havn't got a split pipe or something, it's not just a blown turbo when you start getting smoke.
Simple way to think - that black smoke it fuel going out through your exhuast, so somewhere the air isn't getting there also; make sure you havnt split a pipe, or slipped off or anything first..
also check the exhaust/turbo manifold for any obvious signs of oil leakage...
fianally, can you hear any 'whoooooshing' when accelerating? or is it just purely black smoke with no turbo sounds?

Hello its just black smoke over 1.500rpm smokes like hell with no turbo no sounds at all. The car has no whooshing there lack of power takes for ever to take off.
There some old oil at the back of the engine but not sure were that from near some pipes or the exhaust.
But I cant get no turbo kicking in at all.

in that case, i'd suggest getting the turbo and rebuilding/replacing

The turbo will be either a garret or kkk. Can I fit any of those on my car or does it have to be the same one?
If any can be fitted is there any diffrence in parts or anything need changing?
thanks

Again, technically, any turbo will "fit".
It will most likely be a K03 i believe.
If you're unsure on doing a turbo change - there are plenty of people here who can help you out for some dinner and beer.

Would any pipes cause this problem as some people say it could be pipes no boost and leaking or the turbo?

Why not get a boost gauge plumbed in, and take it from there? Pure black smoke points to a split somewhere in the air intake side due to incorrect fuel air mixture. Or maybe even a blockage somewhere.

Is the smoke actually black, or is it bluey? Black points to overfuelling (or under-airing lol), blue to oil.

What makes you think it'll be a K03?
Also, i thought the garrett and kkk had different manifolds, which would also need changing were you to swap between type..?

I'd be looking at split pipes or maf then. Get a code reader on it.

Id say its not the turbo....unburnt oil going though the exhaut is white smoke. Black is more likely a boost leak as that's part burnt fuel.

But there no engine light on that wouldn't show a problem?
It does sound like pipes.

No.. Bluey is oil, grey/white is unburnt diesel and black is partially burnt diesel

Tom, where do you get your information..? :nope:

It wouldn't necessarily light the EML, my cutting out problem only lights the eml when it happens, light goes out after three good starts but the code is still there. Besides, it could give you a nice simple solution... then again it might not, but surely it's worth a try if you've got access to a reader. If you know someone with some diag kit that would be even better, didn't mention it before as most people don't have access to that kind of thing.

New update when the engine cold it doesn't smoke as much. But once warmed up it smokes alot more.
But something I have noticed when you rev the car up there black smoke coming up from the back of the engine. Its coming up from near the brake servo side?
So there must be a leak somewere?
Its just black soot coming out the exhaust. There no blue, white or oil from the exhaust. The car ticks over fine and starts up fine. Also revs fine when ticking over.

Erm.....come follow the golf while its shitting unburnt oil through the exhaust....it's white, trust me I saw enough of it!
Its not actually the fuel type but the amount its been burnt that causes the colour. (Except with piston ring problems where you get burnt oil as blue smoke)
White is unburnt - hence the misfiring NAD with a broken glowplug and the golf with the blown turbo both shit white out the back.
Black is partly burnt fuel - hence lots of black smoke when you're overfuelling at 4.5k rpm as the turbo cant push enough air in.

Really don't know tbh fella, we can sit here all day making educated guesses, but you're not going to find out any more without doing some detective work on it.
Sorry Tom, read "unburnt" as burnt, my bad.

That bar thing is the valve lol....theres a plug on the bottom of the bar. When the bar moves up, exhaust is allowed into the intake.....especially at idle to remove NOx, theres not so much NOx produced when you rev it a bit so the valve closes partly.
If theres smoke goming from it, its probably leaking from one of the gaskets (exhaust side I'd guess). If its almost hanging off and blowing lots of smoke that could be your boost leak....but I doubt it'd be that bad. The EGR was leaking on the old golf and there wasonly a little whisp of smoke when booting it lol.....I've completely removed it on the new golf though.

My egr has alot of smoke coming from it. You can see it coming from the back of the engine. Also its all black the egr with all the smoke and stuff.
I think I will put a blank there instead now on both ends its cheaper.
Also I wont have anymore problems with egr valves heap of crap.

Do I need gaskets on both ends of the blanks?
Will I need exhaust paste on one then gasket sealer or the other one?
thanks

Erm, I'm not sure as I just replaced mine with an egr delete pipe.
Just had an exhast type gasket on the exhaust part, no paste or anything and it doesn't blow.

This gets more strange I checked everything again the car has had a loop system put in to bypass egr. So I put those pipes back to normal and the car running perfect.
Ive cleaned the egr valve on the outside to see later on any leaks. But at the moment nothing at all.
All the smoke has stopped now out of the exhaust and egr valve.
So how come the car dont like the loop system strange?
