Basically I'm a tight fucker and am not buying the Peugeot tool to do it so how do you guys correctly tension your belts? I know how tight the old one was but is it really safe enough for me to just say "yeah that feels tight enough" or is there a way of doing it more accurately?

Nope. Got a separate tensioner above the water pump that you have to adjust.

Dunno because I haven't got one! Just autodata which doesn't tell you how to tension it. Just tells you to do it lol

tighten it so you can only turn it 90* between finger and thumb

Is that actually a serious answer? Would make sense as I actually did that when messing around earlier

yep for realsies. tis what i've always been taught, by my mechanic housemate, my technician at uni, and my dad. they dont need to be tighter than that really, it'll just shag the bearing. if you find it squeaks a bit, then nip it up a little more, but i'd be surprised if it does

Ah fair play I will do that then. I know they whine a bit when too tight as I did that on my 106 lol

Difference is compared to the 306, that was easy. You could get into the engine bay on that thing to get to the belt lol

I hope you do, because you still have my one!
Have I? I thought I gave it back? Will have a route around under the bed. Will be in the mess of sticky tissues somewhere I suppose....

Should have put this on here earlier for future reference.
The tensioner that comes in the kit actually has a marker to show when it's up to tension.
Bolt the tensioner to the block loosely, fit the belt and use a 5 mm allen key to turn the tensioner until the pointer lines up with the notch. Tighten the bolt and then turn the belt one full turn (4 turns of the crank pully). Check tensioner and re adjust if needed. Also need to reinsert your locking pins to make sure everything is still lined up.

edit; turn crankshaft pulley 2 turns, that will have turned the camshaft just once.

But only gone through half a cycle of the belt. Needs 4 turns of the crank pulley to turn the belt one turn.
