We were 'Dahn Sarf' over the weekend and I noticed that during warm starts the idle sometimes went a little unstable and it would rev up to either approx. 1200rpm or a couple of times 1000rpm - did not do it every time (maybe approx. 50%).Not noticed any problems with a cold start yet and the revving never lasted very long.
I changed the fuel filter 1,000 ish miles ago so will obviously have to check the clear pipe for air bubbles.
The cold start waxstat cable is loosened right off anyway because the waxstat packed up over a year ago.
The engine has otherwise been faultless and we drove down the M6/M42/M40 last thur at 75mph when possible and on a rough calculation the car returned at least 45mpg on the way south.
Any ideas guys ?

I had this and it was a bad seal on the fuel filter.

Thanks - when the weather improves I will have a look at the clear pipe and see if there are bubbles - I was very careful with the fuel filter seal but I know it is an obvious possible cause.

I sometimes found that the car would cut out and then not start again because of it too. I sometimes had to use the prime grenade to pressurise the system again. Was always OK from cold though.

Nice day today so eventually got round to having a look - first I checked the filter cover - no leaks apparent.
I then started the engine - after 5 mins no leaks apparent and no sign of bubbles in the clear pipe.
I then went for a 15min drive - left the engine idling when I got back - no leaks apparent and still no bubbles in the clear pipe.
So with the engine still running I check tightened the 4 bolts - none were particularly tight so I gave them a gentle 'tweek' with an allen bit and a 1/4'' ratchet handle.
Will see what happens on the next long drive LOL

Even if there is no leak on the filter it can still allow air in (don't ask me how, it just can!). As soon as I replaced my fuel filter several thousand miles later my issues totally disappeared. Don't rule that out. I found my idle was unstable only after a restart say 10-20 mins later when the engine was hot. When cold it would never do it.

Thanks Andy - I realise air can get in but I don't think my starting prob was as severe as yours,as I said - I will see what happens on our next long drive and will leave the engine bay to heat soak for 15mins.
cheers max
