A clapped out 406
#1
Yep, me again.

As the Corolla gathers dust on a driveshaft issue (yes, seriously), I have this instead.

A 406 1.9TD with electrical issues Smile

Spec:
  • T2 wound up
  • 10mm pump with usual trickery
  • Full straight pipe (a bit shorter now)
So far I put on a set of original deflectors, yellow full beams, new arms, tyres and speakers. Most of which was lying about anyway

Need to sort the electrics out, hope the new alternator cures it. I have a set of plugs, some wheels bought for it, a bigger turbo to fit (welded to the manifold job), a drop to implement and general tidying up.

Should be fun when all that's finished Smile

Always wanted one in that colour! Just by pure chance I have this one and if I sort the electrics it's a keeper Smile

I got my recon alternator and a set of 25mm spacers with bolts... Priorities eh Big Grin

Now to find just one more wheel, that isn't going to break the bank Sad

yeah, not sure if they setup like the Hdi, ( no intercooler) or if they had a front mounted one. They moved ok too, but not as quick off the mark as the 306, but they cruised really well and made great tow cars too.

It pulls well with that setup!

Broke a valve on Monday, I've been at it all week and only got it done at half 3 this morning. The replacement engine is from another 406 that I found in a skip, with 10mm pump. Running very well!

I'm just happy to have another 406 again Smile

Nah 10mm from a caddy! Had the engine out and decided to swap the heads. Was thinking of putting in an 11mm head but decided against it....

Have a bigger turbo again to fit, a T25 that's like new that I got for free. Have another T2 housing to get reamed out someday but I'm in no rush, the GT20 is lovely for everyday driving.

A terrible vid of what it sounds like outside!

Yep, it's in a T2 housing though. Have plans for a T25 swap, when I get around to it. Same again, reamed out T2 housing.

Need to sort the front of the car too, bumper got torn off  Angry

Yes, it was an engine that I saw in a skip. No room for it and was going to be dumped... So I closed in on it!

406's don't have 10mm heads, I just had a spare 10mm head lying about Smile

I haven't really done much, the backbox exploded and I replaced it with a pipe. Does the job!

The skip engine has done almost 6k miles so far and is due an oil change during the week, I'll probably get that done at the weekend.

A vid of it in action (it does get a little loud in places, not as loud as in real life though):

The front came back well despite its meeting with the ditch, which ripped the front of the car off... Still needs a lot to sort that but it's cosmetically alright and crucially the legs aren't bent

Cold starting is comedy as the glows have failed

I'll poke my head in here again soon Smile

Great cars to be honest. Really good for long distances, comfy, tough, cheap, good on fuel, and they handle alright as well for what they are.

Feck all done since the last time! Made a horrid crude turbo outlet pipe with a lot of exhaust pipe but far far better than the Xantia part that isn't made any more....

Seeing as I was too lazy to get a pic, heres a vid of it

Changed the glows too. All 4! With a set I had in a head I had lying round here Smile

Bonus vid: rewelded the pipe out back and was looking for leaks

Bonus bonus vid: in a pic above was a vulcan red 406 which I used to own

I'll be back some day Smile
