Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate
#1
has anyone had experience of these sticking open and not passing to the cooler

i think this has been one of the contributing factors in killing my engine [Image: sad.gif]

just stripped the plate down to clean it and the shuttle part was stuck in the bypass tube

thus only letting oil bypass the cooler not flowing to cooler

I have been experimenting in the kitchen!
boiling and cooling the mocal plate

i was right! the shuttle is sticking in the plate and not closing

after taking it apart you could see high points and marks where the shuttle was sticking

i have now cleaned up the rough castings around the port hole and have also slightly shrunk the diameter on the shuttle
it is now moving more free to the full stroke

And this is why you buy a non thermostat controlled one and keep different sized pieces of cardboard in the car... .....

Seriously though. Good work. As always.

Or use an oil temperature gauge to see whether or not your car ever gets up to temperature?

yes oil temp gauge works and showed 130 at its hottest that day water temp was normal though

like i said poor choice of oil + faulty oil cooler and me being greedy and jumping at Dum-Dums offer of free track time killed my engine

new engine is getting a oil pressure gauge and an early warning 20psi oil light too

Yeah i was kidding obviously. What oil temp is safe to hit though. Mine averages 90 degrees day to day. Barely ever moves off its mark even after a blast.

oil rating on the tins are viscosity ratings for temps off 0c/100c
so taking a semi synth oil 30c out of its range it will degrade rapidly
