What would be the cause of a bad vibration from the alternator (that area anyway) which goes away when using window demister/indicator/elec windows?

could be the bearings in the alternator. You will have to remove the belt to inspect the shaft bearings.
if you get any rough rotation, or free play in the shaft you will need to get new bearings, or a replacement alternator. Not always Grumpy!!
