Took the gearbox off to transfer onto my other engine and in the process thought I'd clean it up a little.
In doing so I undid all the bolts holding the 3 sections together.
Cleaned it up, painted it - all good.. but when I start to tighten down the bolts it goes into gear and I can't get it out.
With the bolts loose, I can move it in/out of gear.
I'm I doing something wrong?
Also at which position is natural?

Looks like he removed the bellhosing and end cover thing from the mid section... That is some serious effort for a clean up!

Not sure on the names of the parts but... a picture is worth a thousand words

The bolts on that picture aren't tightened up, there's about a mm or two gap on both sections. The gear selector gives a satisfying cluck when moving through the gears.
As soon as I tighten everything up, gets locked into gear.
I'd need to check but the gear selector should go in/out as well as side-to-side, I don't think it's doing this.

Well it all needs stripping down now as it will leak like a b*****d as you've broken the seal's, The selection also get's moved when doing this so something hasn't gone back as it should inside

Just checked servicebox and no seals - the gearbox was drained when I took it off the engine, plus I have new oil for it.
Will get it on the bench next weekend and have proper look

It needs a complete strip down with the internal gears removed, which mean 5 and 6 need to come out, not knowing what your like with spanners it's hard to say if you'll get it working again
Oil must be a 75/80

OK - proving rather difficult to get inside the gearbox. I've had a quick search for a guide but nothing specific has turned, does anyone know of one?

you'll prob need some specialist tools / gear pullers to get the box properly apart

yep, youll need to buy one, not a size many will have already but halfords did have them when I started mucking about with gearboxes.

You're right it wasn't going to end well.
Thanks to Miles and welshpug for their help and suggestions.
Rather than take a sledgehammer to the box I took it to a gearbox specialist who slapped my wrist and told me never touch a gearbox again!
Oil feeder and reverse had come loose and was stopping me closing it up again.
All fixed and working very, very well.
