I radflushed the 1.4 back in the day, couldn't believe how much crap came out!! Made no real world difference though lol, engine ran at the same temp and heaters were hot enough anyway. /helpful

No. At most, flush it with a hose. Don't use any of these flush mixes. Chances are that matrix is pretty rotten and being stopped from springing a leak in a few places by build up. Best bet is to leave it there!
And this is why things like rad weld and (for you) HG weld are SOOOO bad. They just sludge everything up and don't really do the job they are designed to do.

ended up doing the HG a couple of days afterwards anyway since it didn't do anything to fix the problem
Heater matrix shouldn't be all rusted up though? It's inside the car and they're often ali arn't they?

I tested the good ol HG weld before, it worked but blocked the matrix. I really couldnt unblock it.
In future, bypass matrix before using this crap

yeh the matrix is probably held together by the crap in it! They really are very thin and tbh a weaklink in the system!
