How many plugs do you want to use? The glow plug relay on the xud comes straight off the battery, no fuse, so imagine all 4 draw a lot of current.

surely its easiest to rob the heater and its relay from a hdi?
need a part number? http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ and http://service.citroen.com/ will sort you out.
Its for a hilux, i suppose i could fit the Hdi one but i was planning to modify the original metal pipe to take 4 new glow plugs i already have for a Xud
What dose the relay for the standard hdi one lookilike? this is a simple split charge one i was planning http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Heavy-Duty...4aca2c4780

I'd suspect about 20A per plug peak draw when first turned on and settling to about 14A or so once up to temp... That gives a peak current of about 80A.

Seems about right according to my back of fag packet calculations.

Is the HDI one the two inline pipes with flanges bolted together??
I've seen that design on ebay. Good as it works with anything and everything. The passat has one fitted on the back of the head with 3 plugs. Just before the coolant goes into the matrix.

Anyone got the pin out diagram for a standard glow plug relay? think its the 5 pin one i have

I'm planning on putting a second set on my HDI so it warms up quicker.
I've got a set of the glow plug device and the associated cables with the relay box. The heater uses two relays as there are two heat settings. Both relays are fused with 40 amp fuses. I'll get some photos of it in a bit.

With decent plugs you should get heat in the cabin within a few minutes Dee, I don't think it's worth the effort adding another set as well?

How hard its it to get new plugs for the standard Hdi heater?
15-12-2014, 06:55 PM
Impossible. They don't sell them singly so you have to buy the whole unit which is stupidly expensive. However, you could measure and try to find a similar sized plug to fit, Poodle was looking into it but I'm not sure if he found an appropriate set or not.

I think the HDI alternator has a 160amp rating but I have up rated cables because of audio gear. I'll have to check them and swap the units or make one good one out of the two units I have.

The way they do this on more modern cars is that they have an electrical heater instead of heating the coolant. it's inline on the heater matrix. They are around a KW.
Found this in an old thread-
