Fastest car for under £2000 challenge...
#1
I've been pondering of late how far 2 grand will get you, so the challenge is thus:

Who can find the fastest car for sale in the UK for £2000 or less?

I figure we'll have 2 categories; standard and modified, and there has to be quantifiable figures to prove their pace. Nothing subjective, nothing to do with lap times, just power, torque, weight and acceleration.

Game on!

Oh yeh we were talking fastest.... so i presumed straight line million miles of road what car would reach the highest top speed. If its twisties then a supercharged 6 obviously.

Are we talking top speed or out and out acceleration over a distance?

Those big jags will be quick and have a high top speed, but power to weight might take a hit as they are heavy ass cars.

Replied as I posted lol.

PPC used to do the £999 challenge, fastest car you can buy/build for under a grand. It was usually crash damaged 4wd rally machinery with the boost turned up that won.

Even with double that budget I'd be looking at something Jap with 4wd and a turbo, Impreza, Celica GT4, Skyline or a 300ZX. Grand on the car then a grand on a f*ck off turbo, intercooler and a cheap remap.

You've gotta set some rules otherwise people will argue which car is faster round the track, and therefore which is best.

Top speed only
Must have MOT
Must drive away
Driven in the condition it was bought

As DumDum says, any old turbo Jap, bigger turbo, supporting mods (injectors, fuel pump & intercooler at the minimum) and a remap should probably be about as quick as you can get for that money.

Alternatively, chunky V8's: BMW, Merc, Lexus, Jag.

A 7 series with the biggest engine could be got under 2k. I imagine they go pretty quick.

Not as quick as you would think. They are big thirsty engines but designed more for smoothness and comfort rather than speed.

And head unit fascia removed.

Possibly a Fiat Coupe 20vT with some software on...

If not, a real shoddy E36 M3?

I did clarify on most of the points that people have asked about, but anyway.

Judged on power, top speed and acceleration, lap times have too many variables. Must be roadworthy, or able to be made roadworthy easily within the budget. Points lost for auto gearboxes, to make it a little more challenging.

When I read the thread title it reminded me of a thread on briskoda about cheapest car you could get with a 1.8t in it.

I think the fiat coupe turbo isn't a bad shout, but otherwise you'll be looking at something from the early 90s from Japan

Tbh i think you could build a westfield type kit car for that ans have it QUICK my running gear and frame was about 300 (ok alot of man hours to make but that doesnt count does it?) buy a fireblade engine and itll be rapid.. The 1 we had was alot quicker in a straight line than a 400bhp evo..

That's a good shout, kit cars go for silly cheap and are properly rapid in terms of acceleration at least.
