I've been wondering this for a while as there is some confusion, saw an eBay ad for a 306 GTI gearbox, 5 speed, and as far as I know there have never been any 5 speed GTI's, or was there?
Could it be that the model known in Europe as the S16 was called GTI in the UK?
/Confused owner of a 306 GTI, with a 6 speed 'box, just to add to the confusion
FYI:As far as I know the GTI6 model name only existed in the UK, it was called GTI elsewhere.

No, there was never a 5 speed 306 GTi that I'm aware of.
There was the 306 S16 with the XU10J4 engine and 5 speed 'box, and there was the 306 GTi-6 with the XU10J4RS engine and 6 speed 'box.
Citroen Xsara VTS's with the same engine as the 306 GTi-6 had a 5 speed gearbox though.
I would put it down to the usual eBay sellers that don't know what they're talking about.

The real confusion lies because on the continent (France, Spain, Germany, Portugal etc...) what we know in the UK as the "306 S16" was known as the "306 S16" - but then when the original XU10J4 was replaced with the XU10J4RS and 6 speed box, the UK "306 GTi6" was then sold over there as the "306 S16 BV6"
Far as I was aware, it was never sold as a "GTi" anywhere really?

It could be someone making the confusion where in the 306 the XSi has 135bhp and a 5 speed and the GTi has 167bhp and a 6 speed but in the 206 there was a 135bhp GTi and a 180bhp GTi.

It was sold as just "GTi" in Sweden and Norway, that i can confirm, with the XU10J4RS and BE3/6
