So my neighbour, also best mate, is an engineer by trade, with a whole workshop full of metal cutting and working machinery and the topic of headstuds has popped up from time to time.
So with these VNTs on their way to me I thought it would be a good idea to start up the conversation again and see what he can do for me.
I have given him an original XUD head bolt for reference and he is off to find me the best steel he can find to see if we can do anything better than stock.
If these work he is up for making batches of them for sale on here.
The questions I have are would it be best to roll or cut the threads? And he is talking about using "silver steel" is this sufficient?
I think ARP nuts and washers would be used unless any other suggestions are out there.
Anybody have any input towards this or am I pissing into the wind?

guess the only thing is that the arps are proven to stop the head lifting.. but if these are done to the same spec i guess its worth trying them but ultimately its gonna come down to price..

Really carnt see him being able to make them to the same strength as arp studs, and anything less I'd question if it's worth bothering as if there's a chance it's gonna lift and with the cost involved you'd be better off buying arp in the first place.

They are not going to be expensive to make at all. The materials are not a lot of money and my mate wants beer money to make them.
These dudes work with metal for a living so I will listen to them. They seem to know what I want and they know what we do with the XUD and the stresses they will be under.
I am aware they may not work, but for the cost, it is worth trying to avoid the £200 odd cost of ARPs. They will be less than £100 by far to make with my friend only having beer money.
I will be the guinea pig with them and if they don't work, they don't work.
Mainly wondered about silver steel cos i've never heard of it, being a bricky, and if the threads should be cut into them or rolled.
What I want to know is that the threads should definitely be cut into them and

Cutting is weaker because you're taking material away, as far as i was aware anyway...
Doesnt even own a 306.

They definitely have to be rolled, the cost of the material, which needs to be 190,000psi strength material minimum, is considerably more than just using silver steel.
There was a bunch of us who went down this road before, and had a big batch made up, but later found that they just wern't comparible to those made by APR. The material they use is just too specialised.
I think stock bolts are 12.9 grade, 176,000psi bolts, ARP's are over 190,000-200,000psi
The stock bolts stretch beyond their yield point, and ARP's have specific torques to challenge extension right upto the point of yield, using specified lube too, which can make a 50% difference on load.
There really is too many factors to make your own, and reliably able to take the load past that achievable of the stock bolts.
It really is just worth it to pay ARP the 200 quid they cost, because of the research and development gone into the bolts themselves.

Just FYI, while talking to ZX_volcane and doing some digging to try and find some quick for my project, I may have found a kit that is a LITTLE bit cheaper.
But we are awaiting another email from ARP to find out.
