South of Leeds on the M1 had an accident earlier, Toyota Corrolla went into the back of a seat leon. Traffic jam was about 10 miles long!

Haven't seen anything especially bad recently, even whilst out on the bike. Few dodgy overtakes from wankers in 4x4's but that's par for the course nowadays.

I regularly have people overtake me when i'm cycling at the speed limit, I think they just have this 'must overtake cyclist regardless of speed' mentality.

Very good points being made here.

Although it sounds very much like stereotyping, the worst drivers on the roads I've witnessed are usually your vag drivers (not all of them, but certainly a vast majority) there certainly seems to be a trend of if someone is speeding in inappropriate places, tailgating or just generally being a dickhead it's always a vw or audi, just something about them lol

Another interesting thing I've noticed since I've started to drive the gti6 around more often is that where ever you go there's always some bellend trying to get you to race, gets on a man's nerves when you're being followed around for miles by anything slightly modified that notice you're driving around in a lowered 6 with a loud exhaust, and if you don't engage them it usually provokes tailgating and dangerous overtaking just to try and get a reaction from you, absolutely drives me insane.

This!

Happened every day in 306s, and was even worse in the 106 GTI. Doesn't tend to happen in the Merc, although I to tend to get dangerous overtakes because I'm driving a classic and therefore will obviously do half the speed limit...

Having done both Car and Bike test's the bike test was by far the hardest, Well it wasn't hard but that's another point, I just want to know how the hell allot of people pass the test in the first place, As said make it harder and access for various performance levels in BHP not CC as some car's now make silly power from a 1.4 etc

I think we should have a driving test like Sweeden. 2 years learning, learn how to drive in bad weather, controlling a sliding car etc etc.
mind you we will only get the idiotic government haters with the "this government is shit, it's against my human rights to make me do a proper driving test. How am I supposed to drive my benefits children to school in my mobility car now!"

That would never happen...the costs would be ridiculous lol. Lessons are about £40 a week iirc (may've gone up since I did them!)...that's like £4000 for 2 years worth. Would just lead to loads of unlicensed drivers on the road tbh.

If it puts the price up then it might get people out of the mindset that driving is a privilege and not a right!

It's not a right, hence needing to pass a test for it, however for some people it is a necessity... 50 years ago you would've had local shops/bakers/butchers etc all in the village you lived in, and probably worked locally as well. Nowadays there's sod all in many villages, no work except the odd pub and no shops bar a tiny corner shop, meaning people have to drive to do those things. Granted it's not so bad if you live in a town/city as you can walk or cycle (which would probably end in more cycle accidents lol) but even then depending on the work you do (with heavy tools for example), or if you've got 6 bags of shopping then walking and cycling probably aren't ideal there either.

I'm also pretty sure the gov't won't want to reduce the tax revenue they get from fuel by stopping people driving lol.

This!

I have been part of and led campaigns to get a similar system here. I so admire Swedens training system.

The facts are there to show it works too. First you start at 16, so you get a year before you even permitted on the road as a learner, then a year on the road.
I cant think of many countrys that have SO many talented drivers....and theres a reason.

Plus the death rate in car accidents between 17-25yr olds in sweden is a third of what it is in britain. Thats a lot of lives lost due to poor training/test levels in GB

And I bet in glorious, socialist Sweden it's gov't funded too.

It is a privilege but shouldn't be one based on how much money you have.

Why not? It virtually is already, thanks to spiraling insurance costs. You want a license and don't have the money to do it yourself, then it's a good incentive to get a job that's willing to sponsor you through the course. It also means you're a lot less likely to drive like a tool, sod having to pay out for and resit that lot if you get your license taken away. lol

And there we have someone who is down to earth and understands how the world goes round. Not "oh we should all be able to drive, everything should be paid for us by the government"

If the driving test wasn't so piss easy there wouldn't be so many mongs on the road thus less traffic thus les accidents.

I don't buy the argument about living in a village so it has to be a right to drive, theres taxis and busses that come to villages so you can leave if you want. If you dont want to pay for it then move into town. its a choice people have to make.

Also if they made children walk to school rather than being driven 300 yards then it might help child obesity.

Agreed!
Its quite concerning how many people there are on the roads that can barely drive. Personally i think young drivers who are clueless are more dangerous than people who speed (within reason of course)

Well yeah, I'm not a brilliant driver and thought the test was a piece of piss so can you imagine how bad the people who think the test is difficult are.

'cept if you're loaded and can just pay the fine and take the re-test.

Realistically, having a car is basically a requirement nowadays, especially with the job market how it is and having to look for work further and further afield. So why should this be something else wealthy people can access much easier than those on a lower income?
