Well you can be right, but not right in this situation, as what Kez said is correct, fame=popularity and visa versa. But back to my point of this point being invalid, because at the start of this, you stated that this thread was about whether or not "classes" exist and whether or not they can be crossed, to which Kez's point is invalid (however still correct)

you're making my point all the more clear - i was describing how this in my opinion demonstrates the loss of class, whereas someone else can mention how then experiment demonstrates the power that the media plays on this situation...
i never said Kez was incorrect, quite the opposite actually..

That the violin boy has nothing to do with class, its just not popular, therefore doesnt raise many eyebrows, not because the people who walked passed him were lower/middle/upper class...

have you read my first 2 posts?
i am arguing that class IS irrelevant, and that it is under question.
Many theorists study class as a social phenomena and abide strongly by the notion that class is a strong governor amongst society - this i do not agree with.
again connor, what is your point?
as for the violin as a catalyst for the debate, the violin is traditionally an upper class marker of taste, as is particular art, ballet, theatre and so on...

My point is that you cant have an argument on "class" based on a video of an experiment nothing to do with class

What was the experiment actually to do with? Anyone know?

Hahah, excellent observation! What's the difference between a concert and a gig? - merely the point at which people clap.
Doesn't matter how you dress it up, the concept of class imho only ever existed as a structured way of looking down on other people, why do you think snobs are also known as social climbers? Of course class is a governor amongst society, societal structure is based purely on people's perceptions - what is class if not the difference between people's perceptions of themselves, where they belong in society and where they would like to belong in society? I think what used to be called class has probably been morphed into something else these days by people who are paid to re-market old ideas, but the basic concept remains unchanged in my eyes.

/facepalm
i argued/debated/put forward the argument/questioned - 'class is irrelevant'
i got the ' IDEA ' of class from the violin instrument and this genre of music being a taste of the upper class, and those classes with the tastes of the upper class <-- this is how the video has everything to do with class.
please connor don't question things such as this with little/no knowledge on the topic area.
Im not saying i'm superior in this, as i enjoy more than anything informing and edcuating people on new areas, as Dan! mentioned, 'he's not the smartest on this area but still finds it interesting' , and im sure from reading VALID comments he would learn and go off his own back to read behind the topic.
you on the other hand coming at my statements as 'wrong'

So why didnt you post a video/piece of music of some generic classical music? By using that video and explaining it the way you did, puts across the view that noone batted an eye lid because they were "working" class, when it simply comes down to it just not being popular

Quote:The bottom line, the tastes and culture of the so called upper class becoming more and more extinct, with most people recognising top end celebrities and media hyped stars - Who the hell is Justin Bieber and what has he contributed for him to be such a global phenomena.
Of course the tastes of "Upper Class" are changing, with the advent of the internet etc things are changing... The "lower" classes can enjoy things that they once would never have been able to, because media is very accessible to all... Only the absolute poorest of the poor cannot access media...
The concept that the Upper Classes enjoy different past-times is crazy these days, because everything is so accessible to all... The upper classes can access the same as the lower classes and vice versa. Media popularity is what's pushed Justin Bieber to be a superstar...
I've read and read, maybe I'm just a bit dense, but I don't overly get your point...

^^^ This. You're running the argument in circles so fast i'm still not sure exactly what the argument is. It can't be about class in today's society, because i posted a counter-argument there and it was ignored in favour of being all snooty to Connor..? Think you just proved "class" does still exist...

@ Connor - "Its not popular" - a sold out concert the night before for tickets selling over $100, that's enough evidence for me at least to allow it to be 'popular'
@ Ruan - Again, as i said to connor a number of times, your stating my same arguement but with different words. i also agree that class is irrelevant, read my first post.
- the violin can be irrelevant, its how you interepret the experiment - i interpreted class and how it is becoming irrelevant, somewhere along this thread people are reading that im arguing that class differences still exist? im not....
- As i said, i interpreted class and tastes being irrelevant in this experiment, Kez points out busy people not having time, Matt picked out the economic side of it, connor picked out popular tastes, ruan picked up technological enhancements...
Now @ Connor, who is right from the above - as i'm guessing im clearly wrong...

you make a fair point mate, and it's true - with global and isntantanious access to information which wasn't available when there was a strong disctinction between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie, class is irrelevant,
OR has class merely changed into those with new money, as apposed to those with old money. new debate all together.
