VHC of a N-reg phase 1 306 1.9 (non turbo)
#1
Hi, i have inspected an normally aspirated 306 phase 1 Pug. All seemed well i have laid down an 100 deposit. I am going to view again tomorrow and wondered where are the trouble spots, I know the rear axle can be suspect. Your opinions would be appreciated!

Thanks

There's one major trouble spot; the lack of a turbo...

Serious note; rear beam; check for knocks/creaksetc., leaking brake lines, clutch (handbrake on, pull in 1st gear untill it stalls/doesnt), smooth PAS, usual fluids, head gasket (check overflow tank for mayo/dirty water).

Also, cambelt, make sure it has a decent cambelt life on it - either done within the last 5 years or 50k. Some go by more miles/years, but i'd stick to this for confidence.

The manufactures white writing was still vivid on belt, so i can take this as green that it is under 3 years, is time/miles the only count on when to change? I didnt experience any knocks when turning roundabouts etc. I will try the stalling technique but may feel suicidal intentionally stalling the old beast! The engine cranks first time asking as for levels i will double check them all. Guy seems genuine enough, cars done 190 000miles may flush the engine oil out but we shall see tomorrow!

I wouldn't guarantee with the belt by visually seeing writing on it; it's hard to tell the amount a belt has perished; they're made NOT to perish. I'd only go with paperwork myself.

How much are you looking at paying for this by the way?>

Check for arch liners.. chances are if it doesn't have them at the back there may be a rather large hole lurking

500 for a non turbo, phase 1 peugeot 306 on 190k! To be honest, i'd pay scrap value for it, 200-300 MAX.

think i paid £150 for my first phase 1

Non turbo 306 running a NAD bosch? Sure?
check the fuel pump, it may be dangerous on VEG

wrong pump running on veg can end up breaking down internal seals

Yeh. Pull up in the car, handbrake on, try to pull away, so power down and clutch up, and it "should" stall. If the handbrake lets go, the handbrake isn't fantastic, the clutch pedal is released all the way, then the clutch is shot.

unless you look at the pump, theres no way of telling.

if it dont say bosch on it...it aint a bosch!

you can increase fueling a bit....but if you want more power...and mpgs to be honest...get a turbo diesel 1.9
