I've not read anything about this yet, but do you guys have to log in to access a server? I.e. can we lock it down so only our members can use it?

When you set up a server you can "whitelist" players who can be allowed to play via that server. You can also password it and they will have to specifically enter the server ip address anyways
How to set up a server

There are plenty of decent established servers out there.
Personally I don't think you can beat starting with nothing in survival with a group of friends.

It was much more fun when the forest fires spread properly though, wait for your mates to start building a little wooden hut for the first night and light some trees a mile away. Then find a spot to laugh/watch from.

Bumpedy bump...
I'm quite happy to run a server on my machine for a while. Got a proper server that will be running soon, but hosting a couple as it is at the moment without much hassle.

I looked into this and since it needs to run java, its quite server intensive.
We have plenty of server capacity, however it looks quite unstable. Last thing i want is a minecraft server bringing down our box

It's not thaaat bad. Some mods can be a tad unstable, but vanilla doesn't really go wrong at all.

Just try running a server for a bit! Its fine without mods and i really really want to get back into playing. it would be amazing with everyone off here playing it! Its boring to play on your own!
