Cam belt renewal
#1
When I first bought my gti, first thing I did was a cambelt. Didn't replace the waterpump as buying the car had properly cleared me out but it did need doing. So anyway, 7 months down the line and I've had a new pump, coolant and stat sitting in my room for 5 months lol

What I want to know is where the bloody hell do you get the tool for adjusting the tensioner? I've done 4 gti cambelts since using a home made tool but its a bit fooked now. The 1.8 was so much easier as it was just a spring loaded tensioner yo could move with a screw driver. It's basically a square hole in the tensioner, too small for a 3/8 ratchet but too big for a 1/4.

I've got proper tools now I work for a pug /Citroen garage however before I've found when using an 8mm drain plug socket it gets in the way of the 13mm bolt on the tensioner. I've been known to use a mini pry bar behind it to lever the tensioner over before.

Also worth noting I've seen many a 6 engine destroyed (including my own car when I bought it) by water pump bearing failure or the veins on the back falling off and wedging up.... So get it changed Wink.
