I know it's not a 306 but it's still a TU engine is it not?

so the story goes like this, gf was driving to uni and as she was reaching the end of the motorway trip she noticed she couldnt get above 60..then 50..and so on even with foot to the floor. But yet she powered on and got halfway accross the city where the car evently gave out on approach to some traffic lights with foot to the floor in second gear. Dispite trying to restart the engine all it would make is a starting motor noise. Phoning the RAC out ,the guy took all of 2 seconds to hear the noise and declared it timing belt and dragged the car to my place.

We have it booked to go in with a garage tomorrow to change the head and belts etc but there's a niggling thought in the back of my mind saying " how did it get so far if the belt is broken, surley when it snapped that would have been it and the car should have broken down on the side of the m62"

I'm reading up about crank sensors and wondering if it could be that?
Help please, if I can get this car on the road again then I'll win chronic brownie points with her parents

Well, the belt couldn't have broken when she started losing power thats for sure! It could have slipped and knocked the timing out before snapping though. Have you actually checked to see if the belt is snapped?

I suppose that could have happened Sad No, we're getting an AA man to come tow it tomorrow to the garage so I don't want it to look like I've been fiddling in there when he arrives

AA man did it today, cambelt isn't full on broken thinks it could be tensioner or the belt lost a few teeth. With garage now to get head changed over and new belt etc

You can run a TU like 6 teeth out IIRC, probably be OK, it won't run like that, but you hopefully haven't damaged anything...

1.1s are all good with the old screwdriver underneath the valve, bend it back, make sure it seals - jobs a goodun... They're not all finnicky and fragile like GTI6s etc...

Thought i'd update this,
Got car taken to garage (thanks to Arron for telling me of a good one)
The belt had ripped off about 2/3 inches off teeth and bent all 8 valves, luckily the pistons were only a lil bit touched so not worth replacing.
Garage put replacement valves/timing belt/head gasket for £250 , about £200 less than any other garage quoted and £550 less than one place wanted

Safe to say I've won a few brownies with her dad for saving some dollar
