I need some bigger brakes that will fit under 16's, so my question is:
Do I go for 302mm or GTi6 brakes?
I don't know which will be the best option, so I'm asking for everyone's opinion!

Its the old weight vs stopping power conundrum
The 302mm set up is substantially heavier than the GTi6 set up but the stopping power is immense, it takes about 10% less distance to stop from 100mph on the 302s and I cant get them to fade (trust me i tried when i had a set)
The GTi6 brakes are a fair bit lighter but will fade if abused and dont have the all out power of the 302s

Plus the 302s are quite hard to get hold of, compared to the 283s

302's it is then. I want no fade, living in the lake district my brakes can get a good bit of abuse!!

The 302's really are rude, who cares how much they weigh, cant say ive noticed any difference in the way the car handles, but ive certainly noticed a severe change in the way it stops!

imo unless you are tracking it there really is no need for anything bigger than gti brakes with decent pads.

Nah in a quick 306, especially in the diesels you can easily fade the GTi brakes on the road even with uprated pads and discs.

It would be interesting to see how good 302mm brakes are compared to brembo 4 pots, hi spec 4 pots. I know they wont be as good as the brembo set upset ash sells on the 6 forum.

I can't see how 302s are better than GTi6 brakes with decent pads with one test, if they can lock the wheels, then any other brakes which can lock the wheels will perform as well - brakes don't give you more tyre grip?
My 266s with OK pads, if I drop the anchors at 70mph, on a dry flat road I could lock the wheels with NO problems... The only time I'd get issues is if I did that 10 times on the trot with NO break - then you might start to see a bit of fade...
I've NEVER managed to fade my brakes even with "pissy" 266s...

I agree ruan.
I'm on GTi-6's as one of my brembos got a leak last year. Never bothered replacing it as in my opinion they are just as good.
I've done all out track days on this setup and NEVER had them fade.

I don't know about anyone else but when i'm driving on the road I never leave braking so late that there is a need to take the brakes to the limit anyway. Let alone continually doing that enough times to get fade.
Maybe I just don't have enough torkz?

Heh, well my old '6 brakes were commonly on fire, and pretty dangerous after 4-5 heavy applications in a row, as a few people around here will vouch for lol!
Admitantly they must have had crap pads in them, because they shouldnt have been that bad, but I r un 17" wheels, and they look lost, so thats half the reason I upgraded, but now I have, I wouldnt go back....

Last trackday I done I suffered with brake fade quite a bit.
Changed the fluid and its much better now but I still need to upgrade to bigger ones.

302's
Had gti6 set previously, but must have had poo pads in them....So cant really compare....but the 302's are un shittable!

I know mine stop me much better than gti calipers.
There was even a guy on the 6 forum who worked out the brake co efficents of the brakes for 6 brakes, brembos, hi spec and others kits.
And anyone who has been in my car will know mine stop faster than the 6 setup.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy that.
I can lock up on GTI-6 brakes, with fully warmed up semi slicks... I.e stronger braking force WILL NOT improve stopping distance, I need glue on the tyres to do that!

Locking up the wheels does not improve stopping distance it makes it worse.
Just cos you can lock your front wheels it does not mean your brakes are working any better than bigger brakes.
I know how to settle this but I need maria and her rallye.

No, you are right... however it shows that GTi-6 brakes can easily exceed the maximum available grip from probably the best tyre (in the warm and dry) going. Any more braking force makes no difference at all.

Locking the brakes as already said is pointless, as you arnt gunna stop fast in any circumstances doing that, optimum braking I would assume (im no expert here at all) would be to hold the brakes right on the edge of it loosing grip, IE max loading the brakes....its at this point that your working them the hardest, and there producing the most raping ammounts of heat, its at this point I used to melt my '6 brakes, but like I said , they MUST have been on pants pads, because it was far to easy to do this....Ive never drove a decent '6 brakes setup before, so cant comment on how they hold up under chronic braking loads....but at a guess id say they would be pretty fine given most people run them....

Its also worth adding...who cares about 0.4-0.5kg per corner extra rotational mass on a road car....you honestly arnt going to notice it....10kg per corner with new wheels...yes, fair enough your deffo gunna notice it...but not these, not on the road anyway...its really just a matter of choice at the end of the day, as either set is more than capable of filling any 306's owners road needs....

Decent pads, decent discs, decent fluid and I have NEVER had mine overheat.
