Torsion Bar rear suspension - the fact it's 6 bolts and the brake lines and the ENTIRE rear suspension unit falls on the floor... Any other car that handles even SLIGHTLY as well is a trillion times more complex.

106, 205, 306, 309, Saxo, ZX, Xsara, AX, Golf mk1, Golf mk2, Clio, 5, 19. All amazing handling cars, and what do they have in common?

Mk1 and 2 golfs aren't, mk1 Clios are, but mk2+ aren't... They're shock and spring, but still trailing arm, and non independant...

But yeah... Torsion bar is just win, how they managed to fit fully independant rear suspension in such a small package... Anything else is either not independant or a complete bastard to work on...

They call it twist-beam - probably because the beam can flex a little, they're semi-independent...

Do definately think the driving experience is great.
Yes the driving position is pretty crap especially if your 6ft and over or have size 16 feet (Ruan) but when your really giving it some, it works and it works bloody well!
The engines they put in these, all are fairly lively engines. Even the gti is slow by other compariable cars but it just wants to rev it's tits off!....that could be a dodgy icv though
Handling is nothing like anything else I've driven or been in. You can drive it so hard and it just goes where you point it and even when it doesn't, it's fixable easily.
Brakes leave a lot to be desired though eh ed?

The list of faults with the 306 is probably as long as my arm but it's bloody good fun when it works!

I was trying to recommend a small hatch to a newish driver the other day. I went through absolutely everything on the market, desperately trying to not mention the 306, and avoid being biased.

It didn't work, It's the best car in it's class and age, and still comes out on top against newer cars!

And the handling is EPIC.

Learn something new every day, it works well because the Golf was the only thing that could get close to a 205/306 back in the day

This is what gets me about the 306, let's have a look at the competition...

Mk5 Escort - Awful, ugly, can't handle, rusty, cramped.
Focus - Shit driving position and rusty, but the best handling besides the 306.
Mk3 Astra - Genuinely dangerous understeer, boring looks.
Mk3 Golf - Comfortable and well made but slow, boring and soggy in the bends.
ZX/Xsara - Uglier 306.
Megane - Hateful.
Civic, Almera, Sunny, Corolla etc. - Snoooooooooooooooze.

Easy. The Focus is closest, but still miles away
