Hard drives!

Right all the hard drive decided to die in my laptop the other day just randomly so i need to get another i know all about size like the more gb the more porn i can get on there haha... But originally it had a 5400rpm one in there i was wandering if i would notice the difference if i put in a 7200rpm one? Cheers

The faster it spins the quicker it reads the data you've got stored... Whether you would notice it or not it a different matter. Also depends on the rest of the components... computer has to sing the same song... no point having a massive f*cking drum kit in the middle of a group of violins at an orchestra....

Sounds like you need a VTEC hard drive tbh, quicker its revving the quicker it can find your porn.

You may well notice a difference in a 7200rpm drive, but where you'd really notice a difference is if you bought an SSD. They're £70 for a 128GB SSD, and you could then buy yourself an external 1TB drive for £60-70 and an enclosure for a little more.

Laptop drives are slower spinning I think because it causes less damage when you move said laptop about, since they are several spinning discs having them moved about can cause them to wobble/hit things/get damaged so slower spinning means less of that. However as mentioned before the said drawback is slower access times , the difference not being that much though since my laptop doesn't seem particulary slower compared to a desktop equivulent

Steve main reason is power consumption. Remember with a laptop the designers have to think a lot about power consumption where as with desktops, most couldn't give a toss.
SSD also has a greatly reduced power consumption meaning you may see a increase in battery time as well as access times.

Who said anything about an EXTERNAL hard drive? Did you even read the OP?

I read it as hes looking for a new INTERNAL hard drive, as the one in the laptop has died. Maybe thats just me though....

I cant really add anything that hasnt been said tbh, 5400rpm is used in laptops to reduce both damage and power consumtion, albeit by negligable amounts, so its down to you if you wanna stick a 7200 in, but SSD is incredibly fast compared to a regular hard drive, and as it contains no moving parts, is good for the power too.

SSD FTW tbh....single most recommended part to upgrade in any PC, given the HDD is what slows down 90% of general computer activities!

Exactly this. Take my PC for example, the HDD is the only thing stopping my PC being properly awesome:

Ah good point I didn't consider power consumption, I always assumed due to the HDD being serveral spinning disks they'd be spinning at a point where performance wasn't sacrifaced too much but at a less dangerous speed. Since if you shake a laptop hard enough it'll crash
