I think this was suggested recently in a different thread can't remember if it was you or not?
i did read the thread and tried it, didnt make any difference

Cracked resonator under the manifold? What's your mpg like?

how would i check for a cracked resonator without removing the manifold? would brake cleaner/easy start find it and raise engine speed?
ive only gone through 2 tanks, 30mpg and 33 mpg measured over each one, brim to brim method.

As above and you may aswell just remove the manifold to check it and replace inlet and throttle body gasket while you are at it.

wouldnt that make the idle fluctuate quite a bit?
mine stays more or less constant, just really rough after a few mins.
is it a bugger to get off?
edit: wouldnt it have done anything when i covered the whole area with brake cleaner?

so today i disconnected the lambda sensor completely, it made no difference at all to how it ran (that i could tell anyway)
didnt even bring the EML on.

Lambda will only bring up a EML if it goes well out of range.
You need to check the condition of the lambda wiring and also get a new temp sensor bunged in there.

ive replaced the coolant temp sensor if thats what you mean bud.
where would i find the values? im going to test at the sensor, at the plug and as close to the ecu as i can get.
the lambda wiring looks ok tbh, from what i can get to anyway.

Not sure about the voltage values from the coolant temp sensor.
Wiring might look ok but might not be. Break in the wire or corrosion can cause all sorts of problems. Don't forget any added resistance from the wiring and plugs will mess up the final reading reaching the ECU.
Tried any injector cleaner through it? Could be a iffy or dirty injector.

yeah i dumped a bottle of millers through, as of yet no joy.
ive unplugged the injectors one by one and all made it as bad as each other. also measured the resistance of the injectors at the plug and theyre within tolerance.

There's no way you would get 30mpg if the lambda was broken/not reporting.

there were a few long runs in there mate constant 60mph the whole way.
i disconnected the lambda sensor completely today, no change. zip. nothing.
so looks like a wiring or ecu fault now.
need to find out where to do a continuity test on the wires. which pins on the ecu plug would i need?
is there any way to test the ecu itself?

Tried replacing coil packs?
They're renound for going on GTis - lift the coil cover and have a look, if there's hairline cracks in htem, that's probably the issue....

replaced them already bud.
something else happened today, was going through the gears on an A road and suddenly lost all power like the engine died. put the clutch in to coast to the side of the road and noticed the rev gauge stopped at idle speed, put the clutch back out and it drove ok using light throttle.
now thinking fuel pump
got one on its way

looks like the cause was a f*cked up wiring bodge. a load of the cables for the sensors were broken and just twisted together. got the wiring sorted fired it up and it idles sweeter than ive seen it before.
aparently these are all a little bit ropey and have the occasional "rock" here and there but its nowhere near as bad as it was

Well look at it this way, at least you won't have to replace anything any time soon!

Odd that it's only just showed up but glad you've sorted it. We're they all green injectors?

I put a 4bar one on my 6 to improve the fuel flow... Can't be that, unless the 4bar one is knackered....!
