The plane angle is because the injector in an 8v HDi does not sit upright - imagine the injector nozzle in a 16v configuration, they are angled at 0* to the piston bowl like so:
The 8v HDi is angled to avoid the camshaft - since the camshaft is in the centre of the bores, the injector must be angled to allow the nozzle to reach the centre of the bore, so the nozzle must have a "plane" angle - this is the same type of nozzle with a 25* plane angle:
Hope that kinda makes sense - this is why the spray does not hit the combustion bowl at certain SOI angles, you will never fix the smoke because the angle is simply wrong and is not able to combust in the right area correctly.
