I had quite a few clutch cable issues. Can't remember exactly what I had to do but I remember running a 1.6 8v one and it being really short whereas the proper one was a lot longer but a lot harder to get hold of. Remember it being very tight by the exhaust and melting at least two. Might be worth wrapping it in something
And as for bosch change, there's no need to re time the engine, and it's an absolute piece of piss on these engines as they are the right way round! Take fans and rad off and you can get to everything!
