1.8 16v cab playing up

The 1.8 is definitely not a rubbish engine. If anything it's probably one of the better ones Peugeot did. Problem is its let down by the shitty Sagem ECU.
This does sound like the coil pack has spiked the ECU. Other thing that can happen is one day it just will not start!
Depending on how much you want to spend, you can buy a new coil pack for about £100 which is a new version that won't spike the ECU and then buy a brand new ECU for £195. Alternatively, you can get a second hand coil pack and ECU and hope the same doesn't/hasn't happen again.

If you go for the latter, you will need the ECU, BSI and immobiliser chip from the key all from the same car. Oh and get the vin from that car because if you ever need a new key programmed, you will need this.
