Things have changed ALOT since 23 years ago. Hell even 10 years ago electric cars were not easily available and were a laughing stock, now you can go out and pick up a tesla that will beat most road legal cars and then drive you to the shops.
Alot of manufactures are giving up with internal combustion engines now anyway or at least are in two minds about whether it's worth investing huge amounts of money into research and development for something that's becoming quickly redundant due to stricter emissions targets. Yes we'll all miss the rawr of a petrol engine but to be honest its hard to argue with the shear torque electric motors make
