If the ESP on the Meg is intrusive it's not set up right...shitty Renault. 
I don't find it intrusive at all on the Focus tbh. You can turn it off in snow anyway.
I know the tyres would be expensive, but surely cheaper to buy smaller wheels with winter tyres, unless the brakes are too big for that.
