Shorted Stereo System?

In the stereo loom there is a red and yellow cable which should have some bullet connectors in line. Check these are secure.
Also i'm not sure but the car may have separate fuses for the switched and perm live supply. It could be you've blown one and so the stereo doesn't realise the ignition is being switched on hence why you can remove CDs and thats it. Most stereos allow you to do this with the car off.
