Yeah I was quite interested in how ozonehostile came to be as well! 
People tend to assume I have big ears because of my username.....i don't. However, I've used this nickname for the best part of 16 years now, and it actually came from a very old friend of mine.
Remember those old Nokia phones that you could rename the sound profiles on, so it would display the name on the screen? Well he had "wingnut" on his (he DID have big ears
) , and I liked the sound of it, so I used it, but I alternated the caps and added the z on the end to make it a bit different.
Pretty boring story really, but there you go.
