Anyway in answer to the OPs question hammerite will be fine on wheels, I'd use spray but brush on will give a good enough finish if your not looking for show car quality. I wouldn't consider it pikey though as it is a brilliant paint for wheels (and brakes and engines and pretty much anything else.
