... and yet I don't think I've had a single gearbox issue on any of the 306's or Xsara's I've had.
One of my current 306 HDi's is on 250k and the original gearbox is still good - no whines, no rattles, all the synchros are good etc.
I'd go as far as to say that 5 speed BE boxes are tough as old boots providing that you treat them with a degree of mechanical sympathy and change the oil periodically, making sure to use proper OE Total/Esso BV 75W80 as the synchros in particular really don't seem to like running with the wrong oil grade.
