Did the timing holes line up both before and after doing the belt?
The standard lower pulleys have a tendancy to slip on XU 16v's so the timing hole doesn't line up any more when the engine is correctly aligned. Many people have made that mistake, turning the engine with the belt off so the holes line up, and on a GTi-6, you'll normally end up bending valves. That usually results more in a tap than a knock mind you.
If it was all aligned before and after and thus you're confident the cam timing is correct, are you sure you've tensioned the belt sufficiently so it's not slapping?
Try taking the aux belt off to rule out anything related to that.
Everything was aligned before and after mate, I didn't want tl rev it as I didn't want to damage anything. After the knocking I checked the timing again and it still fine.
The aux belt wasn't on at the time so couldn't be that. The cambelt is tensioned correctly.
